switching motors

I have a V6 motor in my 2002 mustang at the moment and I was wondering how big of a v8 motor that I could put in place of my v6 motor? I want to replace my v6 with a very good v8 motor and I want the most horse power. What would be the best v8 motor that would fit in place of my v6?

You could put any engine you want in your mustang, you could put a jet engine in mustang if you had the time, money, and mechanical ability, my point being your original post is kinda vague. The easiest swap to do would be a 4.6 liter or a 5.4 liter from most other ford v8 vehicles, however, most people are gonna tell you to sell your mustang and buy a gt or cobra or something else

I just want to get a new motor so that I will have the same car but a newer motor so that the car will sound like I want it to. I was just wondering if any motor would fit in the place of the v6 because I know nothing about mechanical aspect of it I just wanted to know if I had the money would any large block ford racing motor fit into my mustang?

Deathdiesel 01-04-2010 04:10 PM

How much power are you wanting to make?

stanley423 01-04-2010 05:06 PM

I want to make more than 500 hp for under 10,000 dollars on just the motor I was also wondering what type of automatic transmission I would need on a 392 CUBIC INCHES 475 HP CRATE ENGINE FRONT SUMP and wondering if that would fit in my mustang? Also is there anything else I would need to buy so that the engine would fit?

Deathdiesel 01-04-2010 07:59 PM

o.O wheres red when ya need him?

SnTBakosFinest 01-04-2010 08:28 PM

bellhousing will have to be replaced. wiring harness will have to be replaced ECU iirc will have to be replaced retune will be needed may as well drop a 8.8 with a posi on it as well

02trgt 01-04-2010 11:17 PM

it will be cheaper in the long run to sell your v6 mustang and buy a GT. to do the swap into a v8 you would need all the wiring harnesses, tranny,driveshaft,8.8rearend, motor mounts, trans mounts, and lots of other odds and ends...

son (OP), you just cain't go runnin into forums posting fails like this. You admit you know nothing but you make very specific requirements and then you put down what sums up to a contradiction in terms. You're going to think I'm a total dick in a second but I'm being cool to you (which you'll discover as you learn more) so keep that in mind.

Now, knock off the fail for a minute and get ready for some shitty news:

1, YOU (specifically you) can't have 500hp in your v6 for less than 10k and that's that. Sorry to bring the really bad news first thing but, suck it up.

Life's a bitch and bad news stings. Let that burn in a sec, read it over if you need to.

The only exception to rule 1 is if you're a skilled mechanic, which you're admittedly not.

2, You have a v6, it's filled to the fuckin brim with weak sauce parts. You put a big motor in and the trans won't work. If you make that much on your existing trans you'll blow that tranny apart. You put a new beefy trans in (3K parts + labor) and your budget is blown. You see how this is moving? You go ahead and blow your budget and your rear end is now going to be the glass-jar-in-a-bag-o-hammers. Fix that. Next your suspension is stock so the minute you try to put all that power down and it thinks about hooking up; even if your tranny and rear hold, you'll bend or cleave something. Seriously, sell the sixer and put that 5 grand with your other 10 grand and buy my car, or another one that's already done and the owner is tired of. Save yourself about 30 grand and have a better car for it.

3, You'll have a shitty time putting a pushrod engine in your car. it's a bitch to get the speedo working and guages working and all that shit. What a motherfucker. If you want a pushrod stang get one from 79-95.

It's going to cost a pretty penny. Don't get all pissy because someone is giving you straight facts. Try google, try searching fully built engines and check the prices, then check for transmissions, ecu, etc. Just as an example, a new forged shortblock will run you 3k. Then you need to add heads, cams, intake to complete it. So right there, for a longblock, you're looking around 5K at least. Go from there and you'll see it's not cheap. To hit the horsepower level you want, cheapest way to go will be forced induction. Maybe study up a bit before you get all butt hurt when someone who actually has knowledge on the subject gives you his advice.

stanley423 01-05-2010 12:17 PM

I understand that he is trying to help and thanks for the advice but do yall think that I could replace everything under 15,000 and still get around 500hp? thanks for all the advice.

White04GT 01-05-2010 12:19 PM

Way more than 10,000...It all depends what you go with. If you want a beefed up automatic transmission I would go with a lentech. That will run you about 2500 + 900 for a converter. Next the engine...I would go with a mmr longblock and upgrade to the Trickflow heads and get a set of there stage 1-3 cams. You are looking at around $7000 for that set up. Next you will need to upgrade your rear end to a 8.8. The cheapest way is going to be to find a wrecked GT or someone selling one on a forum(I don't know what this will run you). You are also going to need wiring harness, ecu, motor mounts...all the little things mentioned by others, and you will still not have 500rwhp...a V6 is a horrible platform to start from. Red has a bad ass car with probally about 25k+ dumped into it EASILY, and all he wants is about 15k for it. That car has a built 5.4L, brakes upgraded, suspension done right, and it's S/Ced. That would be way cheaper and save you alot of money and head ache's.

r3dn3ck 01-05-2010 03:22 PM

nope. I was serious when I said it's ridiculously expensive. 15 grand will certainly get you the bulk of the parts (not all). Then you'll have the install and all the little shit which will be probably eat up another 50% of that sum. You're in it for 25grand before you even start. Decide if a 50K dollar mustang is something you really want.

Just a quick breakdown of some major parts:
built modular v8 (4.6) shortblock: 3000
TEA ported 4v Heads: 3500
Cams: 1000
LT/X/CB Exhaust: 1500
harnesses: 250
complete fuel system: 1500
tranny (c4, converter, niggles): 2500
Rear end (used core, built): 1500+
suspension (you need it): 4000
brakes: 500
I've got you for 20 grand and nothing in that list has even been installed yet. Oh yeah... and it's going to cap out at somewhere in the early 400's/rwhp even with the most radical heads and cams. Do you see now why we hesitate to make these damned lists... it wastes our time and dashes your dream.

If you want the full 500rwhp then add 3500 bucks for a custom intake manifold and another 1000 to the heads and up the block to a 5.4 with a .030 overbore.

Jeebus... try to help some people and they just force you to be fuckin brutal.

stanley423 01-05-2010 03:37 PM

thanks for all the info dude didn't mean to piss you off. but that helps a lot sorry to waste your time.

r3dn3ck 01-06-2010 11:25 AM

didn't piss me off... you asked for the impossible. Stick around and read up on the tech threads and you'll learn a lot in a short time. Perhaps you'll find a goal you can do within your budget.

the gillz 01-06-2010 11:38 AM

just put a carbed 5.0 in that bitch, no harness or shit like that. Get a used t-5, 8.8, motor mounts and supercharge that bitch. Remanned 5.0's can be bought here in my town for 900.00 from city motor supply. You might have a place like that locally just food for thought
