Engine Swap

Just asking if this would seem logical. I recently came across an ad on craigslist for a 2000 GT motor with dual overhead cams and it includes the tranny, water pump compressor, radiator, etc, etc. The guy wants $1500 for it and it only has 73,000 miles on it. I want to swap my 4.0 out for this...I have the shop, tools, mechanic, etc. Would this be a logical move?

you'll want a new tranny and a new rear end and you'll need a cobra wiring harness and ECU. It's a pretty involved swap but not impossible or even really hard and the returns are HUGE. I'd do it if you can deal with the car being down for a few weeks while you get it set up.

Its more of a pain in the ass then what its worth. Save your money and time. If you want an 8, get an 8.

One word...insurance...and Red, about how long do you think my car would be down? I'm not thinking more than 3-4 weeks...

a very valid reason and it's not actually that hard, hell everything clips together just 1 way and it's pretty easy to actually do, there's just a lot of it to it. If you spend the time each day working on it then it should take about 5 days work to make it happen. You'll need a complete wiring harness front to back (just to make it easier) including the harness behind the dash, the ECU, instrument cluster, engine, trans, rear end, drive shaft, exhaust, accessories. I think if you whip at it you'll have it done well before the 4th week. If possible buy a wrecked GT from 99-04 and use it as a donor car. Anything not in that list is probably common between the v6 and gt models. Make sure you get a rear sway bar.

If you do it, start by putting the car on jackstands and STRIP it. Make sure to pull the entirety of the interior, including the dash and all trim panels. If you start with an empty shell you'll have a much easier time putting things together.

FWIW, the12fast4u did a 5.4L Lightning motor swap on a v6 car. He'd be a good guy to PM for any tips. I do mostly v8-v8 swaps.

I'm getting my engine!! Whoo!! It's not the 2000, but better!! It's a out of a 2005 GT, 43k miles, includes engine, all computers, wiring harnesses, suspension, and even all the hoses!! The guy's letting me have it for only 3 grand!

you insurance just looks at the outside of the car? hell mine only cares about whats inside.. if they came to a crash and saw that i had a V8 in my V6er i dont think the inspector would think twice before clicking that decline button.
or are you just talking about payments as you go while crossing your fingers that nothing ever happens to it.
lol grats on ur engine tho and ill be prayin for ya on the insurance thing lol

no insurance gives a shit about what motor is in the car that I've ever come across. They care about the model of the car. They're not going to insure the mods to the car anyway unless you do a special rider and have an appraisal and jump through all kinds of hoops. If you wreck it and they see a v8 in the car then they'll pay to fix it. Mine didn't care that there was an aftermarket everything in my car... they paid to fix it.

but when it coems time to submit your claim they will.. all and all the person who handles your claim will see it was a v8.. and has every right to deny claim. "No insurance gives a shit" about helping people either.. they like their money more than you do.. if they find excuse they will take it. my mom wrecked her car and because she did an engine swap insurance denied claim and wrote it off. Faster cars = more threat. more threat= more chance at accident..
