Pros and cons of straight piping

I wanted to do side pipes on my '99 stang. I currently have the flowmaster super 40 series catback exhaust and I was thinking about either taking the Y from the flowmaster kit off and doing side pipes or just going from the flowmaster Y to the sides. Any ideas?

H or X pipe without cats if you can do that wihtout having to worry about smog..

Brings out a slightly better sound, IMO.

I know what an X pipe is, but is a H (or h) pipe the same thing for a single pipe coming from the engine?

An H pipe is just like the letter H looks like. Two straight pipes with a connection in the middle "H". I would not run straight pipes on a v6 ever! Lets be honest, its gonna sound terrible.

WRONG. that sound clip quality sucked ass.

Punypony has mac LT headers, x pipe with 2.5 inch piping and flowmaster 40s

Sorry to break it to ya, but what will give you the sound like that is the long tubes..not how its piped..

Instead of trying to hunt down people that are wrong, do your research first..

Rlrider 08-26-2009 06:43 PM

That is straight piped, what is your meaning of straight piped? Just so we are clear here

straight piping is how the exhaust is worked.... x h y or no midpipe without cats.

Not the headers. The headers on that car is what gives it the louder - somewhat better sound.

Its not the straight piping that is giving it all that... generally, H = deeper X = raspier.

Most v6's go with an X, why? Because somewhere someone figured out that it helps, very slightly, when pushing a s/c turbo or nitrous.

The long tubes help out when you push a supercharger or nitrous.

Now, to me, if you're willing to spend a grand total on the exhaust, and the headers, just for the sound, you're a fuckin idiot. But thats just me.

first con of straight pipe: it will sound like SHIT

second con of straight pipe: you will have no low end torque

third con of straight pipe: you will attract faggot ricer honda owners as friends, which will then alter you ego making you think you have the fastest thing on the road and make you the epidomy of a douchebag. then the only employer that will hire you with your gay ass exhaust will be the manager at burger king so you will be a ast. manager at the b.k. lounge for the rest of your life... (just my .02 on v6 exhaust)

just fuckin with u.. but what do u mean by staight pipe? muffler or no muffler?

You carry low end torque, if you lose any at all its maybe 1-2 pounds..oh wait..these are v6's they don't have low end torque anyways!

The straight pipe doesn't sound TOO bad...a little raspy but its not too terrible..

I don't feel like reading through the whole thread, but to answer the question in the title of the thread:

Pros - Better, louder sounding exhaust while gaining some backpressure on the engine that cats would restrict.
Cons - There is no way in hell you would pass emissions anywhere (except maybe in Germany) with straightpipes.

Regardless of what you do with a catback, routing it to the sides or not buy some bolt on cats for emissions (if you have to do emissions anyway). That way you can pass emissions, and pull the cats as soon as you're done and you'll be set for two or whatever years.

An X on a blown sixxer doesn't sound like a good plan considering the sixxer is an even firing engine

Straight pipes are when you have two pipes on each side (normally with no cross over pipe aka H or X) that have no mufflers and sometimes no cat's on them. That is what a straight piped are is. And it pretty much always sounds like shit. Straight pipes are for redneck trucks, because they are to retarded to know better.

I never understood why the v6 guys with an even firing motor would want an X-pipe on their cars. I mean its better then a Y for sure, but its got to hurt flow having two exhaust pulses hitting each other at the same time at the X. That's why either true duals (pipes for each side of the motor with no crossover) or an H-pipe is the way to go on the v6 cars. If you ask me at least.

^my setup and I think it sound ok

08mustang_gt 08-27-2009 12:33 PM

I think V6's with exhaust usually sounds bad in the first place....

It's going to sound like a ricer pretty much no matter what because it is an even firing motor like the R35 and 350Z. No matter what you do it always sounds raspy to me, and if it does manage to sound deep usually it's in a bad way.

Don't put an exhaust on a V6 for sound, do it for power. Thats what a sixxer needs more.

It's true that a v6 isn't going to sound like a GT but it's pretty easy to make them sound better than stock and saying they sound like rice is a bit over the top I have true duels and it sounds nothing like a ricer and if the car sounds like and R35 or 350Z (I personally don't think they do) who cares those are not slow cars or rice

I mean it sounds super raspy like many ricer cars do. I'm not calling a V6 a ricer, just saying the sound can be easily mistaken. Just like my car sounds like a fucking MAC truck sometimes.

WOW! That sounds awesome, coming from six cylinders. Now if I get an X or a H pipe, what does that replace exactly? Does it replace the stock Y pipe? I already invested about $600 for a Flowmaster 40 series cat back exhaust.
