Throttle bodies

i have a 97 v6 (obviously by name) and the biggestthrottle body i can get is the damn 56mm. and i see the next gen v6 can get 65mm. would there be a possible way to connect the 65mm to my car?

Lazerred6 08-13-2009 08:30 AM

No you won't be able to use that

changing a TB really won't help you any you can believe me I did it and I have a 98 v6 the TB isn't where our motors are restricted it's the heads

01FR500 08-13-2009 08:42 AM

You don't want a TB that is too big and not matched for your car or mods anyway. If you have a TB that is too large you will lose air velocity and actually hurt power. Thats why ITBs are good, lots of velocity.

spike_africa 08-14-2009 07:01 AM

Save your money they do very very little for power. If you want to gain power you need to do the split port swap. Which is when you swap out your single port heads and intake on 94-98 cars with spilt port heads and intake manifolds from 99-04 cars. This will gain you some really solid power numbers and make the car much quicker.

i see ssm sell heads for my car, if i get those heads and a stock intake from a later v6 will that be considered as a split port swap?

yeah, but if you get an intake from a 99-04 mustang, i'd get it polished and ported, and the IMRC valves removed. i'd also get a cam while you are at it.

SSM actually has power pack packages for sale that has everything you need and you get a discount for buying in all at once.

spike_africa 08-16-2009 08:50 AM

Yeah you can do that or if your on a budget just get stock parts from a wrecked car in the junkyard. We actually just swapped the full motor out for a spilt port motor in my friends car rather then do just a top end swap. He had also blown and warped the cylinder heads too.

krenogin 08-16-2009 09:28 AM

wouldnt removing the IMRC valves kill a tad bit of power?

spike_africa 08-16-2009 10:45 AM

You loose low end and gain top end flow. So its up to the you wiether that's worth it or not. For a street car I would keep them so you still have decent low end power. And if your n/a still then I would defiantly keep them.

werd. if u plan on s/c'ing, lose'em

anyone know estimated how much the heads and intake will cost from a wrecked car? yes im on a budget for now, after talking to freind might head to his school, he gets 4k every 3 months for school and only spends 300 on school actually. until then im on a budget. second, since im getting the upper intake from a 99-04 wouldnt it just be best to get a aftermarket intake?

engineman312 08-16-2009 02:43 PM

if you are on a budget and in school, i suggest you just keep saving and saving until you have the money plus more. a project like this can get expensive, and if not done right, you can just wind up with a massive pile of unmovable metal in your driveway. trust me, my brother and i went throw this with seperate cars. my parents were not happy when we turned their driveway and backyard into a scrap yard.

97v6stanger 08-16-2009 04:54 PM

ill have no problem getting the money for the heads and upper & lower intake. just take alittle bit of time. but will adding those alone help me enough to keep up with those 99-04 mustangs? and you think porting the heads and intake would be a great idea while im at it?

engineman312 08-16-2009 05:29 PM

yeah, porting and polishing the intake if its used is a good idea. this set up will give you a nice power boost, and let you keep up with STOCK 99-04 GT mustangs. i'd do a cam while you have the top end apart too.

good luck!!

krenogin 08-16-2009 09:14 PM

Doesnt the v6's cam sit in the bottom end? where its a pushrod engine?

97v6stanger 08-17-2009 05:17 AM

that krenogin i have no clue. but if im going to get the upper intake should i still use my stock throttle body from my 97 or get one that matches the year i got the upper intake off of?

spike_africa 08-17-2009 05:44 AM

You can get a full motor from throttle body to oil pan for in the $400-500 from most junk yards. For just the heads and intake manifold I would look to pay $300 or less for them all. The split port swap is not a big deal and you should have no major problems that could cause engine failure. With the help of a Haynes manual or Chiltons manual its a pretty simple straight forward swap. The only hard part is that you need to mod and cut your fuel rail and splice it into the 99-04 rail. Its not very hard and all you need is a way to cut the fuel rail and then some hose clamps and high pressure rubber line for fuel systems found at any auto parts stores for cheap. Or I believe someone makes them now and sells them premade. But I just made my own as it was simple and cost maybe $8 after buying a 1 foot of hose and some clamps. I wouldn't do a cam swap unless you know what your final goal is for the car. Because cam choice is dependent and every other mod you do. Also the 94-98 cam is slightly more aggressive then the 99-04 cam so you will be better off there anyhow for now with the better flowing top end parts.

But besides nitrous and gears, a split port swap is the best power for the buck mod for the 94-98 cars.

97v6stanger 08-17-2009 05:49 PM

thanks you, im not doing the ssm power pack. i plan on supercharging the car sooner or later so if that helps with cam situation.... but if i get the intake off of a 99-04 car do i need their specific throttle body also? or will mine be good enough (i will be porting everything fyi)

spike_africa 08-17-2009 07:43 PM

You can't swap just the upper intake manifold over like you can on the 4.6L cars, if you are reffering to that you must run that intake manifold with the split port heads. On the TB I am not sure if they are interchangeable. From what I remember 99-04 is larger? correct me if I am wrong someone. You should be able to get the TB from the 99-04 cars with the intake manifold.

EDIT: I checked and they are different you do need the 99-04 TB to go with it.

SnTBakosFinest 08-17-2009 07:48 PM

The TB is larger (as far as I know)

97v6stanger 08-18-2009 06:23 AM

yes thats what i thought also, so i cant do one thing at a time as far as the swap? i gotta do all three things at once? and what about gaskets? thanks alot for helping with this

spike_africa 08-18-2009 06:40 AM

You swap the whole top end over to split port parts, so of course you would change every gasket on the top end of the motor. Head gaskets, intake manifold gaskets, etc.... This would also be the time to swap in long tube headers. Because with the heads off the car you can just slide the long tubes right in there with little fuss. Unless your going turbo or the like then don't do long tubes.

97v6stanger 08-18-2009 10:04 AM

awsome i did plan on doing long tubes anyways. by gaskets i ment what type do i get? as in 94-98 or 99-04

spike_africa 08-19-2009 05:57 AM

99-04 parts means get 99-04 gaskets for the heads and intake manifold gaskets.

engineman312 08-19-2009 06:00 AM

have you thought of buying a 3.8L motor from a junked 99-04 mustang, and taking it apart, fixing it up, and then swapping it into your current car?? it might be a little cheaper, and won't involve taking apart your engine. it'll also have less miles on it.

97v6stanger 08-19-2009 06:41 AM

actually engine man yes i have, but whats i was thinking about that is since what i want to do is so damn expensive i woul djust buy that and get the intake and heads off of that. take that apart and send it out to get bored, yada yada. then once the build on that is done put it into my car. just right now i dont have the money to go and buy the upgraded heads and intake to put on right away so i would just use that cars heads and intake for. and put all the better stuff on that engine
