Starting problems. Yay.

Alright, I know my battery is pretty much dead but I don't think that's the cause of this problem as when I turn the key, the engine attempts to turn over but after a second or two it stops and it sounds like the spark plugs are firing but the engine doesn't start. It sounds like a welder going off in my engine bay is the best way to describe the sound.

So.... What's fucked up. lol

3.8LMustang 01-22-2009 08:57 AM

starter possibly?

take it off and go get it checked at autozone

Yeah, it's pretty loud.

If the starter was bad wouldn't it not turn over at all?

Lazerred6 01-22-2009 09:41 AM

Sounds to me like your battery is toasted and you need a new one that should fix it

Try getting it jumped if that works it's the battery and if it runs for a while and then dies it may be the alternator too

PColav6 01-22-2009 09:47 AM

Tried jumping it from our tahoe but it had the same issues..

Astray 01-22-2009 09:48 AM

Are any of the warning lights on?

PColav6 01-22-2009 09:49 AM

Yeah, 100% on the engine bay. I'm going to run to autozone after class and pickup a new battery. Then I'll post an update.

Lazerred6 01-22-2009 09:52 AM

Sometimes a battery can get so bad that it can't even be jumped. If you know that your batt. was bad get a new one and replace it then take it straight to your local parts store and get them to run an alternaor test it should be free at autozone

PColav6 01-22-2009 09:57 AM

Well if I put the new battery in, it starts, then drive the car to autozone to test the alternator, wouldn't I already know it's working since I was able to get the car there? lol

Lazerred6 01-22-2009 10:01 AM

Your alternator could be on the verge of totally failing but still working a little I had the same thing happen and it killed a perfectly good battery. I thought that battery was going cause I kept having to jump it but the alternator had stopped charging it well cause it was on it's way out the door. I got a new alt. and every thing worked great but the damage had already been done to the battery and once it got cold here I had to replace the battery.

Lazerred6 01-22-2009 10:05 AM

When it happened to me my alternator was rated at 130 amps and it was putting out a whopping 7 but it will still charge that battery if you have at least half what the alt is rated at

I just read that you upgraded your sound system that would be more than enough to over tax an old alternator

PColav6 01-22-2009 10:18 AM

Alright, well I'll go get a new batt and have the alt tested..fucking mustangs. lol

PColav6 01-22-2009 03:26 PM

Alright, replaced the battery and it all works fine now. Did an alternator test and it was running at 85 amps..what's the stock amperage supposed to be?

krenogin 01-22-2009 04:30 PM

i think it is 85 amps. not very much..

krenogin 01-22-2009 04:44 PM

WAIIITTT!! u hooked a soundsystem up without unhookin the battery!!

PColav6 01-22-2009 04:48 PM

No, the battery leads were unhooked throughout the install.

Mr. Zip 01-22-2009 07:16 PM

Sweet man, glad to hear it all worked out. Might wanna get a higher capacity alt ;)

Stock amps is 130

Bwhipple 01-23-2009 04:19 AM

You can check the alternator these 2 ways. The first check the voltage on the battery or at the alternator while the car is running. You should see the voltage staying steady from 13.2 - 14.7 volts if you see it slowly dropping you may have an issue with the alternator.

The other method, which isnt the best but works, is to start the car with the negative battery cable loose enough to be pulled off but tight enough to start the car. Start the car, pull the negative loose cable off. If the alternator is bad the car will stall. To check even futher turn on headlights, stereo, heater fan, and other electrical accessories to increase the draw on the alternator. This can help you to see if the alternator is a little weak.

Lazerred6 01-23-2009 04:28 AM

at 85 amps it is a little bit weak and the new sound could cause charging issues

krenogin 01-23-2009 08:31 AM

that may be right... mine didnt come with mach audio.. so i think mach audio equipped ones have the same as a 4.6

I love it when people make posts like these. "My battery is dead but I dont think thats why the car isnt starting!!!??!?" It must be something other than the dead battery. I cant confirm its not the battery because I have not replaced it yet though!"

like wtf, did you really have to make a post about it? I mean maybe im being too harsh but does not logic tell you to replace the stuff you KNOW isnt working before you assume its something else. Sorry maybe im just taking my frustration out on you because I deal with people like you all day long, but dealing with computers. Troubleshooting is the same no matter what your working on lol.
