Question about ODB2 tools

I have a 2000 v6 and recently got the service engine soon light so i thought it would be nice to be able to get some additional info about whats wrong without having to run to the mechanic every time. I know nothing about the scanners and software out there so hopefully someone can give me a little advice on what i should buy.

I have a laptop with USB and serial ports so i would want to use that if its the cheaper way to go but to do that do i just need a cable and software or do i still need a scanner tool of some sort? and if so is there a certain type of cable i need for the mustang or are they pretty much universal?

Just go to Autozone, have them hook one up and give you a code, then look up the code. That's the cheapest (i.e. free) way.

Goto Auto Zone its free and they will give the problem
or there scaner might come up with several codes, then look em up and see what u find
Dont try the Lap Top Thiing its a whole nother can of worms

autozone, ask for ECU Scan or w/e... i had to for my old firebird b/c i was getting studdering acceleration so they scanned and it said misfire cyl 6, got new plugs and wires and it was fixed.
