Oil change time.

Okay, so this is not a stupid as a question as it might seem. I DO know how to change my cars oil. With my Saturn I wasn't to concerned with babying it and taking part in it's care TOO much so when it needed oil changes. And it has come time to change the oil in my Mustang.

I will be doing everything I need to go to change my oil, i.e. oil filter, air filter, oil, etc blah blah blah. My only question is, every time I would go in to get my oil changed on my Saturn they would say "At so and so miles the manufacturer reccomends you do this blah blah blah" so my two questions.

1) Is there a place I can get maybe like a list of those things I should do to my car and at what mileage Ford reccomends you do that.

2) What brand/type of oil do you all use? Im not going to get the cheapest shit like I did with the Saturn.

on a side note anyone know where you can dispose of oil (legally) I have a container full and need to do any oil change too but I don't know where to get rid of the old crap

i think u can go to autozone n give it to them but i think they charge for u to drop it off

Crimsonred02 09-04-2008 09:53 AM

Places like Autozone will take it for free. Also garages will take it too, some of them even use the used oil to heat their garage, so they are happy to take it from you.

3.8LMustang 09-04-2008 10:13 AM

ohh to to answer #2

ill be using Royal Purple for my next oil change which is probaly due by the end of this month

gonna use 10w40 cuz of a slight leak i have

Steeda97 09-04-2008 10:32 AM

I got a manual with my car that tells you what mileage you should change what. I don't really follow it that much. Just go with Mobil 1 full synthetic. Get it at wal-mart, or target or somewhere cheap.

3.8LMustang 09-04-2008 10:43 AM

im going with all royal purple, ENGINE OIL, TRANSMISSION OIL and GEAR OIL :D

Mr. Zip 09-04-2008 11:10 AM

3000 Miles:
Engine oil and Oil filter
Check power steering fluid
Check auto trans. fluid

6000 Miles:
Check/replace wiper blades
rotate tires

15k miles or 12 months:
Inspect/replace all underhood hoses
Inspect cooling system
Check fuel system
Inspect brakes

30k miles or 24 months:
Check drivebelt
Inspect/replace ignition system
check/replace/clean air fliter
replace fuel filter
change brake fluid

60k miles or 48 months:
Replace spark plugs

Flynnster 09-04-2008 01:03 PM

there should be a list in your owners manuel, and any autozone type place takes it for free. as do oil change shops.

jseven 09-04-2008 05:55 PM

just go somewhere and pay 20 bucks for them to do everything for you...:p

That is the point. The Mustang is my first real "baby" of a car, and I will be doing all the work on it.

SnTBakosFinest 09-04-2008 06:48 PM

I use Mobil1 Full Synthetic along with the Mobil 1 Filter..

Royal Purple is expensive as shit and TBH isn't necessary... Mobil1 works just fine..

Mr. Zip 09-04-2008 06:56 PM

^ +1. It's not like you're driving for NHRA:D

3.8LMustang 09-05-2008 07:01 AM

Royal Purple may be expensive but it lastest 2 or 3 times longer than regular oil

well my stang is my first "baby" but theres just somethings that i'd rather have done all at once. for example, if i were to change my oil i'd have to drive the stang to autozone or walmart to buy the equipment. then i'd drive back home, change the oil and still have to drive back to take the old oil back to autozone. When i could have some "pros" do it all in one stop.

Leonide 09-07-2008 09:38 PM

i use Castrol motor oil and a Fram oil filter. never steered me wrong.

spike_africa 09-08-2008 05:28 AM

Goo do a check on the net fram filters are crap.

Actually, from everything that I have heard Royal Purple breaks down faster than many other oils. Supposedly it is because it is a "slicker" oil for performance reasons ie: less friction, engine runs looser smaller particles keeping the oil together. (Obviously I've never tested this, and I'm not an oil expert, just going from other peoples' expreience.)

I run Mobil1 for 5 - 7,000miles on a regular basis, my dad runs Amsoil synthetic in his Ram 1500 for 7500-10,000 miles.

Mobil1 or Amsoil FTW.

WaterDR 09-08-2008 08:03 PM

Don't beleive too much what you read about oil.....follow the money.

Unless you have a blower or nitrous car, or drive extremely hard, there is NO advantage to using synthetic.

Synthetic will hold-up longer, but you still get sludge formation no matter what oil you use. Synthetic is rarely worth the added cost.

I do run it in my Saab, because the warranty requires it (0W 40) and I run it in my Mustang. I last changed the oil in my Mustang (blower car) in March before it hit the street and it is probably due now.

But I run regular oil in my Pacifica and change it about every 4500 miles.

kobudo 09-09-2008 02:45 AM

I have been using mobil1, but I'm deciding it's probably not worth it next time. I'll probably go with a less pricey synthetic (not sure whose) and a Motorcraft filter.

spike_africa 09-09-2008 06:33 AM

Synthetics do provide better lubrication and less friction, but like he said it may or may not be worth it to you. The longer oil change intervals alone make it worth it for me. I love not changing my oil for 7,500 miles or more.

3.8LMustang 09-09-2008 08:32 AM

ok since im gonna put RP out of the pic, right now i use Castrol GTX, wat should i switch to?

Mobil 1 or Valvoline or stick with Castrol GTX

and i have high mileage so which one would be best

Mobil Clean 5000, It's a conventional "Mix."

Only a little over $2.00/qt and is a great oil. I have always spent a little more on the Mobil1 Filter, but you'd be set with a Motorcraft filter.

3.8LMustang 09-09-2008 09:28 AM

^^^sorry but thats a little too cheap for me man, i just got threw spending only 1 sumthing on a quart of oil n it was the cheap oil so now ive upgraded to better oil, looking for oil thats worth 4-7 bucks each quart

kobudo 09-09-2008 10:08 AM

Valvoline, Quaker State, and Pennzoil all make synthetic blends in the $4-7 a quart range.

3.8LMustang 09-09-2008 10:25 AM

well then i think ill go with Valvoline :D

Wow, you really are a moron huh? Cost doesn't mean a damn thing when it comes to oil. Mobil is probably the most trusted name in Synthetic/Blend motor oils, bar none. If you really want to spend that much on the oil then go get Mobil extended performance. http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/...rformance.aspx
