to cam or not to cam?

hey guys, just a few questions. I dont know much about cams and the threads i've read havent helped me much. so i was wondering if it is worth it to cam a 2001 v6 with only a CAI and full dual exhuast, without doing the heads or anything. and if i do, what would the increase in power and mpg be?

Don't quote me on this because i'm not 100% sure on this but I have heard that caming a V6 is a great way to add hp if you cant afford a super charger or something. The increase in power and a decrease in mpg will vary depending how big the cams (oblong lobes on the shaft) are. The bigger they are the longer the intake valve stays open resulting in more power but your are also adding more fuel ALL the time...super chargers normally only kick in after 3000rpm. If you are going to cam your stang though I think you can afford to pay for the little extra at the pump:D

A cam should be the last mod you do once you have figured out what your plan is for your setup. Also you wont get better mileage from a cam swap, its the other way around. Good power can be had with your mods and a cam swap though.

all bolt-ons should come first.

after that if wanting to stay N/A the Cam should be next. out of the intakes/heads/headers/cam...the cam is IMO the thing holding the car back the most N/A. now when you get into blown apps the intakes and heads will do more.

the 209/212 is a good one. the stock duration is like 180 something(can't remember). check delk or super six motorsports for ideas and service.

15-20rwhp is about the gain from a cam.

in your future mods in your sig i see gears....GEARS would be the best bang for the buck and give you about an equal increase in speed as a cam.

4.10=auto
3.73=manual

and if your a stick invest in an MGW short throw or pro 5.0 short shifter. or auto invest in the J-mod along with a handheld tuner to better shift points and smoother.

yea i'm probably going to do posi and gears first, i was just lookin a head for what to do after that. i had a feeling the mpg would go down, just wishful thinkign that it wouldnt. haha. i'm liking the possible power increase though, and just out of curiosity, how much of a mpg loss would i expect, my car is a daily driver.

thanks that was good i was always wanting to know what would be the best to do for an auto so only 4.10 but whats a J-mod? and i cant even find a cam for my V6 and what is the best bolt-ons for the V6 ??

Underdrive pulley
Tuner (not technically bolt on =P )
Long tubes for exhuast
Port a polished intakes and heads

Thats all I can think of off the top of my head.

Hell just get the Super Six Motorsports performance package. It comes with a cam, intakes, ect. Supposed to be good for 70HP

-25% UDP
-Roller Rockers
-Cheap CAI
-Gears T-lock

-Tuner

-J-mod for auto's

these will get the biggest gains for the buck spent bolt-on wise. exhaust should be the last set IMO.

The jmod is a modification to the auto tranny's valve body. It involves removing certain springs and drilling bigger holes in the seperator plate allowing fluid to move more quickly making shifts faster and firmer. This reduces the heat that the stock settings create because of more friction due to the longer delay which makes the stock settings shift soft and slow.

looked that up to give you a better description since i don't own an auto.
