another exhaust question

I went to a local custom exhaust shop today to get prices and ask questions. I know from reading posts here that there are tons of options. The guy suggested dual magnaflow mufflers and 2.25” pipes, and some chrome tips. Does anyone else have this setup? I’m not really looking for a big sound from my V6 and I’m not trying to fool anyone. They suggested magnaflow because of a more mellow sound. What I want is some extra performance and a sound that says this car has some upgrades. He also talked about X-pipes and taking off the cats, but it starts to get expensive, around $900.00. I would like to know what other people have and what they like, and what they do not like? Has anyone upgraded their exhausts and had regrets about what they put on or wished they had gone another route? Can anyone tell me about magnaflow mufflers? What about tips, they are strictly cosmetic, right? Can I get by without paying $70.00 each for chrome tips? Thanks.

I have loved my exhaust setup on my car, but yours would definately be slightly different. I've heard a lot of different things about putting dual exhaust on v6's.. basically people said it hurts it more than helps because you're taking away a lot of backpressure. Like I said this is just stuff I've heard, but good luck to ya!

Make sure if you pull that cats that you will still pass local laws..... I have a 03 GT and just put the catback magnaflow system on and love it. I know it will sound and be a different part on a 6 but from what i've heard and read magnaflow is what to use for the 6 to make it stand out a little more from the croud.... and yes tips are just cosmetic....

On a v6, if you take the cats off, your car will sound good up till 3k rpms. After that it gets very loud and whiny, almost kinda ricey. Not something I would do. If you wanted to gain as much performance you can, then do the offroad option. However, if you want the best sound either leave the stock cats on or get a high flow catalytic system and ditch the y pipe you have on there for dual exhaust.

If you want it just for sound, www.mustangexhaust.com is your friend.

I speak from experience as I used to mod and drive a 98 V6. My favorite mod was my 3k stall torque converter combined with 3.73 and t/lok. I may not be all that knowledgeable but I know majority of the common V6 questions.

you can get a h-pipe without cats from mac H-pipe is deep x-pipes are raspy. my freind has a off road h-pipe with long tubes and magnaflows dumped it sounds ok for a v6 its deep when idling but not to loud at wot.

What's a 3k stall torque converter? I have the 3.73 and t/lok. My rear-end was replaced with one from a later model GT.

its a convertor for your trannys it replaces teh stock one that only stalls to 1800 it lets you stall the engine up higher to get into the power band faster. ps i hope you added gears to the 8.8 from a GT cause they dont come with 3.73's from the factory.

Well... I probably don't have the 3.73's :icon_pale . The mechanic took the rear straight from the junk yard and put it on my car. I did not know anything about gears at that time. All I know I have learned here on the forum.

Ok, so is posi different than t/lok? What's the difference? Yea, I know I'm not too bright when it comes to these thing, but I am trying to learn.
