Automitic v6 gear setup

Are 4:10's good for a 96 v6? Is there a better setup?

Enlighten me.

you got em?

And uh, do they help your 0-60 at all?

Gears will make the car accelerate alot faster. Because it will have a better mechanical ratio ti get moving. However you should consider that you also need to get a chip/flasher so you can recalibrate your speedo for the new gears or it will read the wrong speeds.

Also if your going to open up the rear you should consider getting a posi installed to get the most out of the extra gearing. Because spinning one tire down the road is wasted power and less acceleration.

So Id have to get a chip and a flash tuner? I might as well save for a GT or a cobra. But that will take like.....the rest of this year.....Gay. I guess it would be worth it though. Unless you can send me a site that has cheaper stuff than AM?

No, you would want to use either a chip or flasher you cant use both as they both do the same thing. Which is installing a new performance tune on your car.

You can however get whats called a speedcal which will just fix the speedo and make everything work too. Your tranny also still has a mechanical speedo gear so you can use the plastic gear that goes in the tranny and makes everything work.

Here is the replacement speedo gears im talking about for older 98 and later cars.

So......lemme get this straight....chips and flashers do the same thing?

So I could just get away with buying an SCT performance chip and skip out on the flash tuner?

And what about the 4:10 gear kit on AM? It has a speedcal. Would that be all I would need, and can the posi traction wait or would I just be spinning tire..everytime I gave the car some gas?

Chips and flasher just put a new performance tune on the car thats it. The difference is on a flasher you can change gear ratios some let you play with fuel and timing curves, and you can read and clear trouble codes.

You can use the speed cal or use the replacement tranny speedo gears which is much much cheaper way to go.

It costs the same to get the posi put in while the gears are installed or not. Because the stock open diff has to come out for the gears to be installed regardless. So spend money once and get a posi installed; your car will accelerate faster if it has more traction. I would highly recommend getting a posi and gears done at once. with more gearing and an open rear its gonna spin one tire in first gear very easily. But its up to you.

This is true for the 99-04 cars, but the pre99's (94-98 cars) need to replace their speedometer grear (which is located under the car on the tranny).

Here is where you can find the speedometer gears. Look at the bottom of the page to see what number tooth drive give you need.:D

Already told him about that to. I didn't realize he had a 96 till after I made the first post.

NeedACobra 09-18-2007 09:52 PM

well. Positrac first then.
All I need is the money part...hahaha..

No you want to get the gears and posi (ford calls it a Tlok or traction lock) and get them installed at the same time.

If you search ebay for "FORD 7.5" thats the rear end that in your mustang. I see used posi's from rangers/explorers all the time on there. Even if used there sell a rebuild kit for them for $45 relaces all the clutchs in the posi and makes it like new. Also make sure its for 28 spline axles and is an posi differential not an "open" differential which is whats all ready in your car giving you a one tire fire.

Any guy who can install gears can rebuild the posi for you and its super easy maybe a 45-60min job once the posi is out taking your time so the cost should be cheap for that too. It can save you alot of money over a new one.

Hm. This should work out perfectly then, cause my step dad manages a transmission shop. Shoulda asked him about this last time I saw him.

Still gotta buy the stuff though....gaaayy.
