lil ping

hey guy's i have a slight problum, besides my first speeding ticket :(. My car is pinging alot, and its not the gas, i dont think, because the only time it dosent ping, is when i put shell into it. It pings with bp, quick shop, and philips 66. So i dont know what to do, i was thinking about some sort of sensor that could be out, but if that was the case wouldnt my engine light be on? any advice woudl be great

what happens if you put midgrade or premium into it? if all else fails, just keep shell in it, lol.

if you use 87, try using 89 91 or 93 and see if it helps.

Ditto, I had a slight pinging and upt it to 89 and solved that problem

v6'stang 08-06-2007 02:39 PM

oh yea, how fast/how much was ur speeding ticket for??

pizzacheff31 08-06-2007 08:20 PM

well it dosent seem to ping with shell, but thats also 91 octane. But i shouldnt have to up that in my car should i? it calls for 87.................and to answer the speeding ticket question, it was 62 in a 45.........kinda bad......i have a good story though, i was passing, and the speed limit changed, and i didnt know it, so it should have been 62 in a 55. but he gave me quite the ticket, and no warning :shakeno:

OK...here is a basic lesson in Pinging....knocking, or also known as pre-ignition. Why does this happen? It ocurrs when the fuel ignites before the spark. Most common cause is using fuel of to low an octane rating. Lower octane fuels ignite easier and burn faster.

If you have a car that is designed to run on 87, but pings when you use it, then I suspect teh following:

1 - Poor fuel quality.

2 - Timing is advanced due to a programmer or tuner.

3 - Wrong type of spark plug. If someone were to swap in a hotter plug, for example

4 - Carbon deposits.

5 - Bad knock sensor

6 - Running lean. A Cold Air Intake could cause this or one of those stupid C&L MAF upgrades.

I have no idea if you car has a knock sensor.

In older, higher mileage cars, you can build up deposits in the compression chambers. This actually can reduce the volume. This increases the pressure and the temperature of the compression chamber which can cause fuel to pre-ignite. The cure is to use higher octane fuel, or clean the deposits.

You might start with a high grade fuel system cleaner such as Chevron's Techron. I fthat does not work, then more extreme measures such as Sefoam can be used. But, I would first rule-out the mechanical issues I mentioned.

BTW, the CEL (engine light) does not mean crap. My car was running on 6 cylinders and the light never came on.

My car detonates really bad with regular gas wether it be with 89 or 87 I HAVE to use premium.:(
