Mustang Performance Mods?

I was just wondering what would be some good performance mods to get some good streetable horsepower? I have a 97 3.8 with headers and an exhaust, what would be some other good performance mods. I was thinking cold air intake, and underdrive pulleys, what are some other good ones. Thanks

Welcome to the boards!

The fastest route to a faster v6 is rearend gears and a traction lock differential. Then go with a free flow exhaust. CAI and pulleys will only give you a minimal gain in power. If you want to beat GTs, youll need either boost or nitrous. I know a guy making 650whp with a 95 V6.

Marine_rm 07-15-2007 08:59 AM

Yea i was also considering gears. What would u consider 3.73 4.10...or what? And for suprechargers or nitrous what would give me the most bang for buck. But i dont whant to put to much of a strian on my engine. I was lookin at an ati procharger. what do you think about them. It also needs to be mods that can be performed in the driveway of my house. Thanks

jeredan2003 07-15-2007 10:14 AM

I think you would like 4:10s alot. The best bang for the buck is definately nitrous. The only downside is that you have to get the bottle filled alot. Its about $30 per fill. A properly setup system with all the extras is very safe. I would suggest an NX efi stage 1 kit. The 75 shot should give you enough power to beat a GT that isnt modded too heavily. If you plan on going with boost, turbo is where its at on a v6. That would require alot of skill under the hood and alot of welding involved unless you can find someones pre-made kit. I dont think a company sells a kit for it. The prochargers are nice also. They just wont make as much low end power, but the top end is great! A procharger would be alot easier to install.

v6'stang 07-15-2007 10:25 AM

tmaturbo.com i've heard good things bout them. and vmptuning.com for the procharger and tuning.

Marine_rm 07-15-2007 10:53 AM

Aight then. 4.10s and nitrous. What about the turbos yall mentioned from tma. Is that a bolt on kit or what. How much modification to the engine or car would i have to make with a turbo setup. And what is better a twin turbo setup or single turbo. Thanks

v6'stang 07-15-2007 11:04 AM

two are better then one. umm, as for the mod's to the engine/car, i think he's got a section on the website that tells ya how to install it, not sure tho. i know the oil pan must be tapped, headers removed. other then that and an oil line ran, i think it just bolts up. plus possibly moving some a/c lines.

Marine_rm 07-15-2007 11:37 AM

Aight. What other modifications would benefit the turbo setup for max horsepower?

v6'stang 07-15-2007 12:53 PM

bigger turbo, forged internals so ya can really turn up the boost. if ya build the motor the turbo will have greater effect. i'm not too sure when it comes to this stuff, some of the other guys would be able to help you more when it comes to the engine internals.

Thanks alot man. You have been alot of help. I think im going to go with a turbo form tma and some gears. Once again thanks alot.

not always true.
two 35mm turbos are not as good as one 95mm or 1 106mm

IMO id go w/ a HUGE single turbo

lol Twin charge it (S/c and turbo)

v6'stang 07-15-2007 05:44 PM

ok, single s/c with 2 106mm turbos. i figured if ya mount a gas tank on each of the fuel rails ya MIGHT have enough fuel for one 1/4 mile run. as for them blocking the window, dragsters don't open their eyes till the end anyways!

Marine_rm 07-15-2007 08:30 PM

so what size turbo should i go with. It needs to be one that would not destroy my engine when i punched the gas pedal.

Cheddarbob 07-15-2007 08:59 PM

I was joking 106 mm turbo are so not legal

lol, i was jokin' about my last post too. the gas tanks would prolly obstruct ur vision, but anyways. i didn't know if they even made such a big turbo. lol it'd be cool to see a turbo and s/c car tho.

That's still dumb, like having your penis hanging out of your pants.

4.2L V6 Stroker with a turbo @ 18 psi, that would be pretty wicked...

Ones being built here in Austin, I'll get pics as soon as its done.

Cheddarbob 07-19-2007 05:07 PM

Initially, The owner of the sixer vert turbo charged his 3.8L engine and was putting 474 rwhp / 459 rwtq. That was in the $5,000 range, but I don't know the exact cost. Here's a link to the car before the 4.2L Stroker install:

http://www.promodularperformance.com/ford_96-04_v6.htm

They just finished with installing the Stroker long block and turbo last week and will be dyno tuning it soon. I think they're looking to hit 600 rwhp. Its a serious sleeper looking car that will surprise alot of people. The engine is around $4500-5000, so you can count on 8-10k for the engine/turbo combo.
