Where do i start...?

So, I have a 1998 V6 that is basically 100% stock, besides some sweet wheels. Well anyways, I really want to increase the power of my car but am basically retarded when it comes to cars... I have browsed around for a few months now and talked to some mechanics and stuff like that and it seems that the first things I should do are:
- New 4.10 gears
- dual exhaust
- cold air intake
- tuner

There are also things like getting a blower, which honestly i don't even exactly know what it is, what it does, or how much it costs (feel free to enlighten me ha ha), or getting something like a custom turbo kit built. I think both of these are out of my price range for the time being.

I will have about $500 to spend with the possibility of getting a loan for a little more. I can put away money every week if i need to but that takes a really long time for me.

So basically, what is the best course of action? I was thinking about getting the gears first because I'm thinking that it will be the most noticeable upgrade, but I really don't know. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

Well..

You can do what alot of people do, and go exhaust first.

Gives you that sound, and it will boost your HP up a little.

Running an exhaust can cost you anywhere from $350 and on..

Flowmaster, MAC, Bassani, Borla, Dynaflow or w/e (I spaced out on the last one)

Are all good choices, I would recommend going with a dual exhaust..

Gears, I don't know how much they run, I believe it would be a little more then 500 bucks though with install and everything.

CAI (Cold Air Intake) won't show too much HP boost, honestly, I'd go get a K&N filter and call it good.

Your tuner chip, I beleive can get a little expensive..I'm not sure, you can check out americanmuscle.com and I believe its VMPtuning.com as well. VMP is really good, as well as americanmuscle.

A blower is a supercharger..

Vortech, Procharger, ect. But, it will cost yuo a pretty penny. We're talking about reaching up into the thousands. As far as the horsepower boost, yea, you'll have a huge boost.

Turbo charger..

Well, same with a supercharger, huge horsepower difference, lotta cash. For superchargers I'd recommend VMPtuning, and for a turbo, TMATurbo.com ( correct me on those sites if I'm wrong, a little drowzy at 2:30am.)

You can also go with a nitrous set, 75 shot, as far as I know, won't do alot of damage, but, the risk on blowing your engine, IS there. And a complete (to many guys) / safe kit, will also cost you about 1500 bucks or so.

And basically, with a supercharger/turbo/nitrous setup, you will need a tuner chip, and a dynotune for the charger and turbo.

IMO, I would go

-Exhaust
-Gears/Pausi or Filter
- Chip

And then, save up cash.

Hey, thanks for the info. I think i will go with exhaust first and then gears. americanmuscle has that new tuner on preorder right now for mustangs, a bit expensive but it looks awesome. I'll start saving now!

I would't waste your money on the new SCT tuner. For the mods you will have, I wouldn't be able to justify spending $560 on a tuner. The tuner your are referring to wont really benefit you unless you plan on running a wideband and getting a blower (for the additional readouts). You'd have to have some serious mods to justify that tuner.

Just get an SCT Xcal 2. Its $380 on brenspeed.com. Brent at brenspeed could probably custom make you a tune and send it loaded on the tuner.

good start...

a blower = supercharger

beltdriven device that forces air into your engine...

Just an FYI, it's $379.99 at americanmuscle.com, also, and that includes one custom tune.

Well Im still making up my mind on what to do.

I dont think i will change my exhaust just yet, it is the only part on my car basically that isnt stock. Im not positive of the brand because i didnt buy it, but it sure is loud! I am bummed that it is not dual but it does just fine for now.

I think that i should go with gears first. Although this is rather costly (looking like its going to run right around $900 with installation) i think it will be the most effective modification at this point.

After the gears my plan would be to get the tuner next (the Xcal2 looks like it will be more than sufficient).

After that i would probably do the exhaust.

But then im stumped. Anyways, i have time to decide on those, but, how does my plan sound for now?

SnTBakosFinest 11-26-2006 07:31 PM

Doesn't sound bad.. You can do small things...change out your stock air filter for a K&N..thats like...50 bucks or something.. new pulleys...uhh... throttle body..intake.. little boosts...

But my orig plan is.. exhaust, gears, blower, tune.
