15 year old needs help with mustang!

Ok, I have a 1997 v6 Mustang. I got a low-pro body kit for it, and I am getting Lamborghini doors on it. I also want to get a bigger engine that will smoke other cars. Can I put a Cobra engine in it, and would it be alot faster off the line? I want it to be really fast 0-60. My grandpa is a bodyman, and he is doing the paint. I want Candy Red with Ghost Flames. I live in Alaska, and I want it to be the sickest mustang on the streets. But ya I don't know what to do about the engine. Also any suggestions on making it sweeter like NOS and stuff would be great. Thanks!

You can certainly put a Cobra motor in your car, or a GT motor for that matter.

You might want to consider adding a super charger to the V-6 and keeping the same engine in the car. This will most likely be the cheapest option.

Your V-6 has about 180 hp I think.

A 96 - 98 GT will make about 220 hp.

A 99 - 04 GT motor will make about 260 hp.

A 2003/2004 Mach I makes around 280 hp.

A 1999/2001 Cobra makes around 320 hp.

A 2003/2004 Cobra makes about 380 hp.

Adding a super charger to a V-6 will get you about 350 hp.

Adding a Super charger to a GT will get you about 400 - 450 hp.

All of these number are in fly-wheel hp and are not exact numbers.

Keep in mind that you need to consider a lot of factors when making a motor swap....such as having the right computer, tune, transmission, and fuel system upgrades.

This si why I suggest adding a super charger. You can buy one for about $3,000 and install yourself with some help. BUT, you do need to get a dyno tune.

Also, I would suggest swapping your rear gears and installing 4.10's. If you mention this to your grandpa, he should know exactly what you are talking about as back in the 60's gear swaps were very common. He may also think that you are crazy to do this, but trust us.....a gear swap is the best thing you can do for a Mustang. Just about every guy on this board has either done it, or will do it. It is really a must!

If you get 4.10's and a supercharger, you will have one, serious fast car.

These mods on a GT will put your 0 - 60 times in the mid 4 second range, while on a V-6, should get you below 6 seconds.

he has a single port motor (94-98) he makes 145hp 215tq

PColav6 10-08-2006 06:54 PM

sickest Mustang on the streets...:shock2:

Why didn't you just get a GT or something?

Engine swaps from the V6 to a V8 are a PITA and usually not worth the time/cost.

Hey, keep in mind he is just 15......but seriously, to get a "sickest Mustang on the street" type car, you need at least 650 hp.

Wait . . . do you not know if the v6 mustang is FWD or RWD? O.o

i hope that was just a mistype.

its RWD, and thats not the RWD power thats crank 94-98 = 145crank hp and 99-04 = 190 crank hp

fox_racing_tricked 10-08-2006 07:58 PM

well it is alaska there are some sick cars, but probably not like where u guys live

White04GT 10-08-2006 08:00 PM

I'm pretty sure he was asking if that is 145hp the the wheels or the flywheel.

I think he was talking about RWHP and flywheel HP there teal, lol

ok, currently you have a 145~ crank hp. so in reality you may have 120 hp to the wheel( i say wheel because you don't have a locking rear end, meaning you do a burnout with one wheel). Your very first mod should probably be a set of 4.10 gears and a T-Lock(this will allow for both wheels to lock together when doing things such as burnouts). If you plan on actually building serious power, you should look into a rear end from a GT mustang, it will already have a t-lock in it, and then just add the 4.10 gears made for the 8.8 rear end to that. Secondly you CAN do a motor swap to a cobra motor but it will be very costly. Cobra motor's and tranny's are not the cheapest thing to come by. If you really want a V8 and do not want to stick with the V6 then look into a GT motor. They are much cheaper and easier to come by. Finally, the easiest route would probably be to just get a supercharger for your V6, and build your motor with heads, upper and lower intakes, and a new more aggressive cam. With that you will have one of the sickest sixers around. You have many choices to make with this car, you just need to come up with a plan that is realistic and that you can afford.

i say build the six up...

Ghostalker 10-09-2006 10:01 AM

not always true about the one-wheel-tire-fire
stang00 and I have done tons of burnouts in our v6's, and most of them were dual tire, althoug hyeah if traction was REALLY poor (ie ice) then one wheel spins ='(

TClark22 10-09-2006 10:16 AM

no it is true...i have never done a 2 wheel burnout in my six and only possible when i am in a wet area or slick cement

eep... we must be magical because it was just the opposite... dualies on perfectly dry (ie. stang00's driveway) pavement

drive the sixer as a daily driver and get a GT or a cobra to build up. Save yourself all the hassles. Besides... you're 15, there's lots of time for going fast. Work on just driving for a couple years then decide if big hp rwd cars are right for you. Otherwise, time to drop 20K into your drivetrain.

It can have a lot to do with weight distribution

Shouldn't it be the other way around?

If it's harder for the wheel to get traction then it will spin, but if it has a lot of traction, it will not psin...
