? = quicker acceleration

i want more torque and horsepower. i want to get off the line quicker with better acceleration. i split my single exhasut and installed a dual X pipe... so whats next? i'm getting confused on intakes cuz some people say you DO need to buy a $300 tuner with an intake and others say you don't. and is a new cold air intake really gonna give me that much quicker acceleration or is it a waste of $$$?

also... if i do buy an intake kit but plan on buying a supercharger in a few years (once i get $4000 haha), will the supercharger override the intake kit? in which case i should just wait to buy the supercharger right?

so what's the best way to get more power/acceleration without paying too much? what have you guys done?

Lances03SVT 07-12-2006 01:49 PM

An intake and the tuner combo suppossed to give the 05/06 V6's around 25 hp.

like everyone on here says, for quicker accel. look into gears best bang for your buck

spike_africa 07-13-2006 01:04 PM

If its a 05-06 then you would need a tune. Otherwise a cheap ebay intake is the way to go on a v6.

BAB232 07-13-2006 07:09 PM

trackloc, and gears... would be your best bet, later on porting heads, cam, tune, cai.....

what kinda gears do you mean? could you gimme some reccommendations/links to the parts? i dont even know where to start for this mod.

BAB232 07-13-2006 11:16 PM

hmm mustangtuning.com has some good stuff, ahhh what im doing is pullin a 8.8 out of a GT. with 3.73 gears... suppose to run good with auto, don't run any higher gear ratio in your backend you'll seee a huge loss in top speed.... and most likely won't hook up, and if your not goin over 300 to 350 hp just buy a ford trackloc. or go the route im goin with a totalled GT... and takin that.

hope that helps a little.:punk:

Yes you loose top end but you still wont be able to go to those kinda numbers even with 4.10 gears. Do you know how fast you can go with the 4r70w and 4.10 gears?

If its an auto get 4.10 gears 3.73's for a manual with power adders is the normal thing we all do.

Saleen S330 07-14-2006 01:02 PM

You loose minimal top end but that shouldn't be the main concern, if it's from redlight to redlight or on the track.

Well I really don't know alot about gears, but I recently purchased a Mac Cold Air Intake and am very happy with the results, it definitley made a difference on my mustang, but probobly not as much as a gear change would make. As far as the tuner, I am not sure but I am still planning on buying a diablosport tuner or either a chip, but it will be a while.

Saleen S330 07-15-2006 08:13 AM

CAI is more benefical for mid/top end power. More acceleration...get gears.

mustangV6_04 07-15-2006 09:42 AM

I've got a cai and i can't tell any difference except thye cool sound but my butt dyno might be broken.

BAB232 07-16-2006 09:13 PM

cai doesn't really help unless you do any larger upgrades... as in heads, cam, and tuner... a better bet then rebuilding YOUR backend, pay a little more, and get a 8.8 that bolts right up, and build it with a ford locker and the gears you want, and use YOUR axles, much easier and you have a heavier backend than stock Gt's. thats what i have.

MattyP083 08-05-2006 06:26 PM

mines an 05 manual... so i should 3.73 gears? and whats a 8.8? if i buy gears i dont need to buy anything else right?

an 8.8 is the size of the rear end on a mustang gt, since you have a v6 you have a 7.5. if you do the 3.73's(which is the gears you should since you have a manual) then you will need some sort of handheld tuner to recalibrate your speedometer.

BAB232 08-16-2006 12:33 PM

i have the 8.8 in my 6 with track lock and 373 gears picked up ALMOST a second with my car 16.4 on the stock engine..

Saleen S330 08-16-2006 12:50 PM

my friend's V6 stock ran a 15.98(his first time at the track too) and after Tlock 3.73 gears, MAC CAI, UDP's, X pipe, dual exhaust, 180 stat now runs a 15.50 or 15.40 but lots of wheel spin.

i'm thinking of taking the perfectly fine 8.8 rear end outta a totalled 2005 GT from a junkyard, swapping it with the 7.5 on my 05 v6 and getting 3.73 gears. so basically what you did minus the tlock. what exactly makes up the 8.8 rear end that i need to take out of the GT... just the axle and gears? and is it very hard to do the swap myself?

spike_africa 09-06-2006 01:29 PM

the housing and all other parts are 8.8". The housing itself is larger and beefier.

GT's come stock with the Tlock so you actually would have one! but try to get a rearend from a 5-speed GT because it has 3.55 gears and the auto has 3.31's.

Spenc 09-08-2006 09:53 PM

Grrrrrr

for the gear change, im looking at a 4.10 to put in my v6 manual, is there that much differance in acceleration?
(I know the cockiest camaro z28 owner ever!!!)
my friend is swapping a 2nd gen 300gt vr2 for a 1st gen vr4 to get him to stfu :) yay!
He wont stop makin fun of me for the v6, yeah idk

MattyP083 09-09-2006 11:38 AM

i don't think you can put 4.10s on a v6... i have an 05 v6 manual and people said i had to go with 3.73s. you should check it out before you buy them. and yea you'll feel a difference in acceleration.

Codiddy 09-09-2006 12:04 PM

they rule of thumb is not to get 4.10's if you are geting a turbo, supercharger or nitrous, otherwise, it's all personal preference.

Erik 09-09-2006 02:04 PM

gt rear end

I also took the rear end from a newer model GT and put it on my 98 v6. The car holds on tight when taking fast turns. I scare myself sometimes trying to push it to the limit on turns to see what my car can take. IT's quick off the line too. I slo installed a cold air intake, and realized a nice little gain in performance. With the rear end and the CAI, should I have a custom chip? What about just for the gears, should the chip be tuned?
