gears & CAI questions...
 

just wondering which gears would be more beneficial for a 2004 automatic trasmission sixer... i'm looking the the best performance i can get...

also, i'm looking into cold air intakes and it seems as tho i can't find a resoanably priced one for the 2004 v6 model... MT only offers this MAC straight shot air system...stupid question i know but...is this setup considered a cold air intake b/c it called a straight air shot not a cai? and about how much hp can i expect to gain...10 or so? thx

4.10's or go home simple as that. Don't fear the gear my friend.

And a straight shot is a cai just a different style that's all.

I can't help but think that 4:10's on a mostly stock V6 would severly destroy it's top speed.....which isn't even that fast to begin with - I was reading on another forum (Mustangworld I think) and someone said that on the V6 mustangs, the fuel injection cuts off at 118mph, is that true? If it is, with that low of a top speed, and gears.....it'd just be horrible, wouldn't it?

Yes that is true but think of it like this.

1. You're going to need a tune or chip with the new gears to correct for the change in gears for the speedo.

2. That chip/tune will eliminate the top speed govenor

2. You shouldn't be going that fast on the street anyways.

Oh okay, didn't know a tune would get rid of that. But uh, I'm not planning on going that fast on the streets, it's just thinking the possibility that a honda civic will pass me at 118 mph is just wrong :yawn:

definately go w/ 4.10's since you have an automatic, and as for the CAI expect about 1-2hp to the wheels if your lucky, oh and a cool wooshing sound lol!:beerchug:

Go with 4.10's with an auto, and people that fear it will kill top end speed, it won't hurt it that bad at all and if you make more power if will over come that anyways. I had a 95 GT, i know it's not a sixer but, and i had 4.10's, around 300HP to the wheels and over 140mph wasn't to hard to reach. my saleen with 3.73's with the old motor could do 130mph easy on the highway.

118 isn't the cutoff because I was going atleast 120 down the free-way yesterday. My gauges are stock so the needle was sittin on the pin but I don't think I was going much faster than that.

they make 3.90s. your only choice isnt 3.73s and 4.10s.

Well, do you have larger than stock tires/wheels and didn't get a tune after installing them? If so your odometer is reading wrong.

i've never seen 3.90s for the 7.5"

oh and yea the stock speed limiter is supposed to be 118, due to the stock tires only being rated to about that speed . . . but a tune gets rid of it .

But even so, with or without 4.10's the limiter will still be 118MPH, you'll just get there faster with the 4.10s

so if I were to get gears would it make a difference that I have a 5-speed? And how much would the gauges be off by without a re-tune, I upgraded to 18's with 245 and 275 size tires. Also what's the problem with only one wheel spinning when I burnout, brakes and pedal pressure are fine, but i dunno. Only one wheel spinning pissed me off though.

Get the gears/CAI/tune all at the same time and you will be 100% satisfied with the results. If you wanta a good CAI get the FIPK or the JLT one's.

No it wouldnt, although 5 speeds generally react better to 3.73's

And your gauges will be off by a VERY noticible ammount :)

Oh and for your third question. . . you have an 'open differential' so it doesnt lock both axles when one wheel starts spinning. If you get gears, make sure you get a tlok to fix this problem

ford racing i believe. the ranger came with a tlok so ford has the replacement part you can get, should be just under 200$

bitchin. Always wondered about my one-wheel thing....and all the talk about T-loks. 2 and 2 equals a nice mod with 3.73 and a tune im thinking.

it has to be the best non-hp mod you can do, you'll definatly feel it. and your car wont take so long to rev.

i have a 2005 v6 5speed manual... will 4.10s work or do i need 3.73s cuz its manual? and what else MUST i do/buy in order to get the gears? a new tune or something?

and do i have to buy a tuner or can i just get it done somewhere?

I don't think the gear ratio matters whether you have a manual or automatic, just make sure you get the right one for oyur rear end..

And yes you will DEFINATELY want a new tune with your new gears.

whats the tlok for? and why should i want one?

from what I got the tlok closes the open differential i have, i thought GTs already had em, but it locks the axle so when one wheel spins, so does the other, such as when you burnout, and mine made only ONE WHEEL spin. stupid, I know.

will 4.10 gears fit an 05 v6? and are they easy to install?
