Gears
 

I have a 2004 v6 auto, and was thinking about buying some gears. so i could increase acceleration? or atleast notice a signifance change. Just what you all's opionion on what gears i should buy. and how much for instialtion and is there any other costs that are involved that im unaware of?

i believe the 4:10's work well in our autos, im goin to put that and tracklok in sooo ive been lookin around and thats what ive been hereing.. maybe someone else has a different opinion...

dont you put the gears in the rear diff?

yes. if you can get under your car and think you know what your doing you can probally do that one yourself, but if your goin to put gears in it put traklok on too! get that traction that the GT's have..

im not looking to spend major money, just quicker accelration, dont plan on adding any more horsepower to the car, heard the gears work miracles for "our" cars

yea! thats cool, but you might want to... i mean its 150-300 bucks more, your goin to be under there... might as well, 1 tire fire is embarassing..... hahaha especially when your buddies all got Z28's and GT/Cobras riding 400+ horsepower hahahahahaa

i've heard the 3.73's are good too, idk bout for the auto's but i was lookin' to put them in for my 5spd...i heard a lil better gas mileage and top speed...but if ur lookin' for jump off the line, then go 4.10.

4.10's for autos or 3.73's for Manuals...
you should expect to pay 150-300 for installation,yes you really should pay to have these installed unless you are a skilled mechanic from what i have read, not something for someone just begining to mod a vechicle with limited knowledge. And you also need to get some sort of handheld tuner to recalibrate your guages so that they read the correct speed, and also how many miles you are putting on the car...
as for the T-lock, it is not necessary, but as BAB232 said it is very embarassing having the 1 wheel fire going...and since the rearend is already open you might as well spend an additional 150 or so for the t-lock and have them put it in...you never know when you will wake up one night and say i need that supercharger NOW!!! hahah jk
so basically this is not a cheap mod at all, but is totally worth the cost from what i have read.
Gears=150 + Tuner=380 + Install=250ish = 780 so expect around 800 all said and done with out the T-lock...hope this all helped:beerchug:

also since your car is newer i don't think you need the bearing kit,http://www.mustangtuning.com/rearendrebuild1.html , but it is a cheap insurance policy to make sure you don't destroy your new investment.

i would either A) try to pickup someone 7.5" rearend that allready has done it, or B) just try to find an 8.8"

do the 8.8's just bolt up to our cars, or is the suspension mounts n stuff different from the v8's??

yes it does. However a 8.8" wont have the gears your looking for, they came with 2.73's - 3.27 or soemthing like that

and the 8.8" is heaver so unless your lanching hard on it, it will make you slower.

It's true, the 8.8 came with lower gears stock, however, if you can find a wrecked GT/Cobra with 3.73-4.10 already in it, then it also already has your limited slip. although heavier, the gears should help overcompensate. You need to be carefull about where you get them though. A dishonest junkyard may tell you they have an upgrade rear end and you end up with 3.27s. E-bay may work, but again, be careful. as far as common GT gears, 3.73 can improve city mileage over stock, but lowers highway mileage and top speed. (I know a guy who put 3.73s in a modified cobra with T45 and went 165 down the autobahn with more to go, so top end isn't that hurt). 3.73 are very common by my understanding. 4.10s are more common for the track. Incredible take-off, run the gears quick, again, you'll top out even lower, and expect gas mileage to drop everywhere. I don't remember who, but someone recently introduced a 3.9 for the 8.8", I don't know about the 7.5" though. Also remember the Cobra has a higher redline, and I don't know gear sizes on the T45 (even though) I have one, or a 4 speed auto. Hope this helps somewhat.

just get some 4.10s, a tlok and a tunner. (thats what im doing)

Go to ebay and you can find 3.73's or 4.10's with Tlock for around 100 bucks. My friend did that with his 04 V6 Stang. Also he got the superchip tuner to calibrate his gears. Gear install costed him 250 bucks, and that's something the nonmechanic should try. I've worked on cars for years and i still don't like to touch rearends.
