stupid noob question

hello all i am still new to these forums and mustang modding so bear with me if i sound stupid. i just got my first mustang, a 2006 V6. It is still stock, except for a drop in k&N airfilter. my question is about the governor/rev limiter. First, the speedo only goes up to 120, and the car won't let me go faster than 115. I don't even have to push the engine to get to 115, and I can still feel more power in the engine. What is the easiest, and maybe inexpensive way to get a speedo that goes above 120 and let the car go above 115? do i need one of those SCT2 tuners? thanks for any help.

The way i understand it is a tuner like that would give you the ability to go above 120, but im not sure about swapping in a speedo... maybe the electornic speedometer on the 99-04 would be able to do it? Woudl hate to have to use that every time though.

The tuner will take of the rev and speed limiters, but do u really need a bigger speedo?? It would only be a one time deal to max out on speed. Because if you do it often your engine isnt going to last.

TEXASPAUL 03-31-2006 03:58 PM

yeah id be careful taking the limiter off....
do u really want to take a risk of skrewing up the engine for just a little faster....
if its worth the risk then go ahead....
im a wimp i guess......lol:loser:

That's strange, my 05 V6 went all the way to 120, I didn't keep it there long I just wanted to see if it could do it.

And a new GTO went by me like I was sitting still, those things are fast !!! I hear they have around 400 Hp so I didn't feel bad about it.

GREG@94GT 03-31-2006 09:08 PM

you can keep acelerating past 120 (w/ a tune)... ya'll just pin the needle....

you dont need to go that fast anyway... its not very smart:nono:

Ok thanks for the advice everybody, looks like an SCT2 will be the first thing on my list. And i'm not looking to go faster than 115 very often, i'm not even planning on going 100 very often. But I was driving on some really desolate roads and just wanted to see what the engine would do. It didn't take much to get up to 115, and i was just kinda curious how much faster the stock equipment could go. And I hope I don't sound even more stupid but is there a way to keep the rev limiter on but just make it so the car won't keep me at 115? or are they linked? The RPMs weren't very high at 115, I don't remember exactly and i can't just hop in the car and go 115 again to find out, but there was definitely more power in the engine. Also is there a particular order in which you should add parts to your car? i've heard replacing the stock exhaust is the best place to start.

also remember that tuner will give you some extra power as well, i thin it's like 20 hp more depending on what gas you use... have fun!... also Gears would be fun too..

thanks grimmz . . . probably going to buy a tuner soon now for some cheap power. I use 87 octane gas because thats what the manual said to use, but i was thinking about getting the venom recluse as well, and they say you need to run higher octane with nitrous. Do I need to do anything to switch from running 87 to 91 or can I just start putting it in the tank (i also hear they sell 93 at regular gas stations in some parts of the country, is this true?) And what is the stock gear ratio for the 2006 V6?

P.S. thanks to everyone for answering my questions without making me feel like an idiot, i'm sure they seem like stupid questions but i am new to this and am still learning the basics

GREG@94GT 04-01-2006 12:07 AM

yeh...
they sell 87, 89, and 93

sunocos here had 87, 89, 93, and 94 but recently replaced 94 w/ 91

Codiddy 04-01-2006 12:11 AM

crazy!! in California and Nevada we get good old 87, 89 and 91.
I've also been to parts of South America where they sell 91 93 and 95

CA = stupid hippies worried about the global warming...

CA has the gayest laws regarding emissions and I bet thats why they dont have anything higher then 91

Codiddy 04-01-2006 12:20 AM

yeah California emissions standards suck, it limits my choices for parts and keeps me from getting than K & N i wanted.

get it... fu.k the police!

Codiddy 04-01-2006 12:29 AM

probably will eventually . . . i want to wait on alot of modifications untill after the 3 year/36000 mile warranty is up, except maybe the dual exhaust, I've been itching for that one since before i picked up the car.

Grimmz 04-01-2006 10:19 AM

hey just curous your not close to carson city by any chance are you?

and i think the stock ratio is the same as our v6's that would be a 3.27... if your thinkin about doing gears, MTing has a package on their site gears and xcal2 plus a 6% discount for being a member of the forum...atleast i think you guyz still get that discount...

Codiddy 04-01-2006 01:50 PM

cool I will look into getting that package deal, seems like relatively cheap horsepower. I'm in Las Vegas, so i'm not that close to carson city, but nothing seemes that far away when you have a mustang!

WaterDR 04-01-2006 02:35 PM

An SCT tuner or chip (or any other brand for that matter) is a nice way to remove the speed limiter and raise the rev limiter. Also, they will advance your timing so you can take advantage of higher octane fuel. If you have an auto, then they are even better to have because they will firm-up and speed up your shifts as well as allow the car to rev higher when shifting.

I have driven an auto before and after a tune and the difference is very noticeable.

Codiddy 04-01-2006 02:51 PM

well i have one of the very few manual 2006 V6's in california . . . it was really hard to find! like 90% of the V6's come from the factory with automatics now the dealership said. But after hearing everyones input i really want an SCT2 now!
