Dumb Tire Question
I've been saving my money up, well I always like to have extra cash, but I'm pretty much in the need to get new tires. I'm going to go with Toyo Proxes 4, what came with the car. I've never bought tires before or know much about em.
I can get Toyo Proxes 4 275-40-17 & 255-40-17 for $520 shipped. or I can get Toyo Proxes 4 255-40-17 for $480 shipped. Not completely worried about the price. It would look better (better traction) to have 275's in the rear, but then that means I can't rotate the tires and cuts down on tread life. If I get 255's I can rotate them to get better tread life. My baby is a daily driver, 9 months out of the year is bad weather (pretty much rain) and I don't do track or drag racing. I might go have some fun at the drag strip here and there, but otherwise I just like to hod rod around and have fun, not really into burning rubber, nor do I launch. Question: I would like opinions what the best option would be. How much would tread life be cut down if I can't rotate the tires? I know this is a dumb quesiton, but I over look everything. :/ Edit: I have 245-45-17's right now, don't think I've really rotated them much and almost 30k miles on them from me, not sure about the previous owner('s). Could have gone longer, but I kind of screwed up on taking care of them. :/ Wider is not necessarily better for rain and snow. In fact, they’re worse. A wider footprint makes it easier to hydroplane. Which I'm not sure if it's worth it, so I'm looking for more opinions. Edit: Now I'm leaning more towards going 255's all round. Wide tires would be for better hooking up, but yet I don't really race, I just like to hot rod and have fun. Otherwise it would be for looks. |
275's are too big for your rim. 255/40/17's all the way around. Brand is up to you.

I failed to mention I have 17x9 Cobra R's. |
and you have 245's on it now.. they must be all swayed in. yuk!
When I had 17x9 r's I used 275/40/17 all the way around. You get a little rub on the control arm and k-member at full steering lock but it's otherwise usually ok. My fenders aren't even rolled... |

go with 255's up front and 275's out back. It will look much better and you wont lose much without rotating them. And I am running 255's up front on mine, and 315's out back and actually feel better in the rain driving with more tread.

If I had the chance to do 315's I would in heart beat, but I don't have a 10.5 inch rim. :/ haha |
My car is a daily driver of 100mi a day, and my last set lasted a good year at least and they were used too when I got them and had about about 1/2 the tread life left on them too. I dont really get on it too much or show out lets say, so no big burnouts being done and you should get the same amount of wear on a set as you would normal tires tread. And all of my travels are hwy mileage or puttin around town on the weekends.

I have a feeling I'll go with 255's front and 275's rear. I could always swap them out too, well rotate the left to the right. Unless that wont make a difference. I just like to hot rod and have fun, my theory was having traction wouldn't really matter that much, but the looks of it and maybe feel because I have smaller tires, might be cool. |
well I run 17x9 in the front and 17x10.5 in the rear with the DD, so on the 17x9's I have 255's and on the rear is 315's. The 255's seem to hug more of the rim better than 245's which is the stock tire size.

How long have you had those on your car now? Do you honestly think it would be worth it for me? B ecuase of not being able to rotate. $40 more I get the wider in the rear, but I get less milage out of my tires |
yep 255/40/17 up front and a 275/40/17 out back is what I would do.

If they are all 9 inch wide, I'd go 275 all the way around.

Slightly OT, but what does rolling your fenders do, whats it look like, and whats the purpose of it? And yea i have 9inchers all around with 275s and i only rub a little at full max steering, and thats very little.

Not sure about the whole rolling your Fender thing, but google it. ;) LoL just playing, I think it has to do with your car being lowered too. I have an idea, but I can't exlain it. ;/ |
