Wider/Narrower tires for rims?

Okay, I have a set of 4 16x9 95' Cobra R rims. What's the widest tire I can put on these, for the back ones? I currently have 245/50/16's all the way around, but I heard of people putting wider/narrower tires on their rims.

275 should be no problem with a 9 inch wide rim

275 would be fine. You may have some rubbing of the front tires on the sway bar or the K-member at full lock but usually not a big problem.

go with 275's... u could probably go larger, but 275's are the sweetspot.

275/40's or 35's.

So I can fit 3cm wider tires on my 9in rim without any problems? It will only be for the backs. Anyone have any pictures of rims have wider tires then the rim?

Oh and I had a question about the sidewall profile. I currently have a pretty big sidewall and I want to keep it that way. If I get 40's or 35's for a sidewall, will it be the same? I think the second number is a percentage of the width of a tire that is the sidewall, or something like that. I just want both sidewalls to be the same size or pretty damn close.
