Brakes Squeelin..

So i put on some new brake pads a few months back, only front ones because i couldnt get the back hydraulics to compress but backs didnt need changed so it didnt matter. Now that they are broken in good, they are squeelin every time i stop. Sounds like shit without question. Is it because the pads i got are bad, or what?

probiker427 08-29-2009 12:10 PM

that happens with my brakes every so often i got new ones last summer and they do the same thing its pretty annoying and would love to see whats causing it

Deathdiesel 08-29-2009 01:09 PM

Fix our problem D: anyone?

badtib04 08-29-2009 01:11 PM

and my friends :P lmao

Aftermarket pads or OEM pads? You replace your rotors as well as your pads? Or just pads?

Deathdiesel 08-29-2009 01:42 PM

I replaced only my front pads, i dont believe they are aftermarket, just OEM probably. I could go check if its important.

probiker427 08-29-2009 02:27 PM

yeah mine were just oem

wildride02gt 08-29-2009 08:52 PM

chances are the pads are either dirty, you picked up a piece of sand between the pad and rotor, or they are glazed. either way, i would take the short bit of time to pull the wheels off and look at the pads. hit the rotors and pads with some brake cleaner, and examine the pad and rotor surfaces.

Deathdiesel 08-29-2009 08:55 PM

K ill try that tommorow, hopefully will help. What do you mean by glazed?

WaterDR 08-29-2009 09:27 PM

Did you coat the back sides of the pads? There is an anti-squeal material that you can rub on the back of the pad. Any auto parts store will carry it....just tell them you have some new pads that are noisy.

Also, were the rotors smooth?

Deathdiesel 08-29-2009 09:34 PM

No i didnt coat the backside of em, i replaced em with my dad and he never mentioned it. The rotors were pretty much smooth, no rough spots that i remember. The only thing i remember is the pads had i think a kinda of friction plate or whatever but i think those are normal. I dont know much about pads.

WaterDR 08-29-2009 09:50 PM

There should have been a plastic backing for the back of the pad. Did you use that? It is designed to help with squealing.

Deathdiesel 08-29-2009 10:09 PM

1 Attachment(s)
Na, it had a metal plate on the back of it, probably a cm thick or so.

Attachment 17150

These are the back pads, they are smaller and i couldnt get em installed so i had em stored for a bit.

wildride02gt 08-30-2009 02:34 AM

ok, theres your problem. those thin plates are to help prevent brake noise. Hit up the parts store for some brake pad grease, and some silicone for the sliders.ask the guys at the counter. comes in little packets for about $0.99. you only need one packet of each per axle. so, since its just the fronts, just get one. pull off the pads, clean em with some brake clean, then apply the brake grease to the BACK(caliper side) of the pads, apply a light coat of the silicone to the sliders, then re-assemble. should no longer have any issues.

WaterDR 08-30-2009 06:00 AM

Bingo....what he said.

wildride02gt 08-30-2009 08:32 AM

glazing happens to stock-type pads and rotors when they are subjected to LOTS of high heat and heavy braking. the pad material gets so hot, it "glazes" over, actually melting the pad surface to create a smooth, glossy look. this is will squeal, and will noticeably diminish its ability to stop the vehicle. this condition also destroys rotors, as the hard pad now cuts into the rotors whenever you brake.

if you use 100% silicone on the pads (especially where the calipers touch the pads) squeaking will vanish, I've been doing this for yrs and never had a squeak.

mustangvsix 08-30-2009 09:24 AM

did you just get the cheap pads from like autozone or somewhere like that? My brother did and those things squeak like crazy, and he has the anti-squeak stuff, the backing plates and they were put on by a shop. Plus the rotors were lathed/turned at the time of install. I can only assume it is cheap brakes that are causing it for him.

AZ's brakes are not cheap brakes, I have the AZ's ceramics and they are excellent, Lifetime warranty, let's see the high priced pad company's do that!
absolutely no brake dust and will lock all corners of my stang.

krenogin 08-31-2009 06:04 PM

interesting,, i have AZ duralast ceramics.. But i think they destroyed my rotors. not sure. Either way ive not changed them since ive had the car, and its untelling how long they were on previously. So far theyve been on for 35k miles.. mine do annoying squeaks, i think its due to the warped rotors so its like beep - beep - beep u get what im talkin bout... What should i do? take em in and get replacements for FREE and get new rotors? Or can i do that?

you can if you originally purchased the pads, the pads will not destroy your rotors anymore then a 400$ set of pads, rotors will warp over time thus making it necessary to have them turned, the squeaking is a result of improper installation of the pads. Rotor new at az are about 25$ and you can get them turned for about 10$ at most machine shops.

AZ lifetime warranty on brakes is just what it says.(If they are in your name) Take off the old ones bring 'em in, and they will swap them out. Same goes for AAP. I've been a manager at both, and I've had guys swap em out every few months or so. We had one kid in TX who drag raced his 3500 Duramax on weekends, and every other week swapped out the pads and rotors from killing 'em.(he also drove like a d**k, abused that truck)
Also, take advantage of the warranty on the rotors. Standard rotors carry a 2, sometimes 3 yr. warranty. Keep track, and swap 'em out right before the end of the warranty period. Play the system right, and you will never have to buy brakes again! :D

Cheap pads sometimes make noise no matter what you do to stop them. You need those backing plates though and some anti squeal stuff to apply to the back of the brake pads. But even that might now make them totally quiet.
