18x 9.5 18 x 11 2000 Cobra R Wheel

I was able to find two different people, one selling a complete set of Cobra Rs and another selling the rear wheels widen to 11 in. Ill have 6 wheels now lol. Ill post pics when I get them. I wonder whats the widest I can put on the rears and fronts.

spike_africa 06-18-2009 07:55 AM

335 on the rears would be max.

I think you'd probably still have to do some massaging in the fender well & probably on the shock mounts to manage a 335 in the back on an early model SN95. I've seen people with rubbing problems running 315's..

I'd go NO wider than 275's on the front.. I'm probably going to down size mine in the future to a 255. The 275's follow every single little bump, dip, and crack in the road.

krazypony 06-18-2009 10:03 AM

I am actually running the stock size of 245 on my front with the 315's out back, yeah I think 275 is just over kill for the front

275 isn't overkill for daily driving. 315 is overkill. My autocross coach is going to be running 315 front and rear on his cobra.

I wanna see pics of it when he has the 315's up front, is his car a front wheel drive?

SeanStang 06-18-2009 04:08 PM

275 on the 9.5", 335 on the 11". If you do less than you'll have the stretched tire look which i can't stand.

315 up front? thats crazy. but if its not a street car...then I could see it.

venom 06-18-2009 07:18 PM

Ill do a 275 fronts for sure and will see how much clearance I have when I mount the rears. For sure Im going large in the rears.

I want to see 315 up front lol.

01FR500 06-19-2009 07:42 AM

I think with maybe the fender rolled, correct spacing, you could fit some 335 tires fairly easy. AIX cars fit 335 all the time.

I will get some pictures of it. I haven't talked to him in a while. But yeah the 315 front and rear are going to be for autocross events. Its on his '98 Cobra w/ vortec s/c. He is supposed to be giving me his older 275 race slicks on '95 Cobra R rims.

+1..im probably gonna be doing 255's on the front soon.

I found some 17x9 2000 cobra wheels. I dunno if i should get em, the guys asking 290 for em, and i seen alot of the stick on weights inside the wheel, which scares me. they got 255-50's on em. What do you guys think?

venom 07-05-2009 06:26 AM

I wouldnt worry about that. Whats important is that wheels are in good shape. BTW 18 x 9 is an after market wheels size. Ford only made the 2000 Cobra R wheel in 18 x 9.5. You may verify that its a OEM wheel by checking for a Ford PN in the spoke of wheel. Not that there is anything wrong with after market but its good to know what you are buying. I have recieved the 4 wheels, waiting on th 18 x 11s which should be here within a few days.

krenogin 07-05-2009 10:52 AM

oh yeah, their aftermarket.. its actually a 17x9. made by detroit wheels or something,, he got em off jegs.

how do you widen a rim that much?

Wouldn't you risk weakening the rim?

I think there is a limit on how much you can widen a rim, but he went form 18*9.5's to 11 which is only 1.5'', and that isn't much material to add. I have seen some guys widen there 95 cobra R rims(before the aftermarket came about) as well as 99/01 cobra rims 2''. They just split the rim in half, section in how much you want, 1in 2in or whatever you want then weld it all back together, smooth it out and your done. There is some company online that alot of mustang people use, I think they charge around ~100-150 a rim, but not sure on that number at all.

yeah i know but id rather have a 1 piece wheel not something that was cut in half and then slammed back together

It's a fairly common thing to do, as long as you've got a shop that knows what they're doing, the wheel can be widened as much as you want and it will never be an issue. They're using the same materials and welding them together. The only part that would worry me would be the actual center section of the wheel where you bolt the wheel to the hub, that portion of most wheels is the weakest point.

Widening a 9.5 or a 10.5" wheel to 11" is nothing. http://www.weldcraftwheels.com/Gallery.htm

By widening it wouldnt you be messing with the dimensions like offset and backspacing. So by Widening say a 18x10 saleen rim to 18x11 or a 18x9 cobra r wheel like mine to 18x10 would it be logical to put in a 1" wheel spacer so it doesn't tuck in to much

That would seem logical, I'd say that you would have to put longer studs in the hubs to compensate for that, but it's no big deal.

for sure
