Tire questions (for autox)
So I am getting some used 17X8s of a 2000 gt in the not to distant future I currently have 15x7 or whatever came stock on the v6 I have 205s on them and I need more rubber for autox. Ideally I would want 17x9s in the future but I am getting a good deal so the 17x8s will do. The stock tire on a 8in rims is the 245 but I see that I can get 255s on them but it says that that it's not the best fit.
Now what I need to know is will I have issues with the extra 10mm of rubber while I am autocrossing that could be potentially dangerous if not everything is good I don't care about mileage and speed being off by like 2% I'm looking at the nitto extreme nt555 if that makes a difference Thanks for the advice guys |
Anybody:confused:

255 tire is great for an 8" rim. You want as much rubber on the rim as possible without bending the sidewall too much. HOWEVER, I would really advise you to reconsider the nitto extreme nt555 tires. They are not going to be good autocross tires. There are tons of options out there that are much better. The Falken Azenis rt615 are one of the cheapest and considered by some one of the best street tire for autoX, about $130 in your size for that tire. And you'd be running a tire that no autocrosser can complain much about. Kuhmo makes several good autoX tires other than v710 and v700, and are of comparable price like the MX tires. Dunlop RE-01R are a top dog street tire for autox. Also look at the Dunlop Direzza sport Z1 Star Spec tires, just a tad more than the Azenis but great.
AZENIS FTW. |
I just finished reading a shit ton of reviews and I think I am still going to get the nittos but it's because of the forum discount and the gift certificates that I have to AM so I can get them for about $100 a tire I don't want you to think that I am totally ignoring your opinion 01fr500 I read the reviews on the azenis and if I don't love the nittos I will be buying those once the nittos wear out. The reviews that I read from people that had the nittos and drove stangs and had an aggresive driving style were all good except for one guy with a 03 cobra he said they wore out to fast but what can you expect with 400rwhp

Just a quick question.....Do you shave your tires for autoX??
|
I would only do that I tire that I was only ever going to race on but since I daily drive my tires I wouldn't do that. It makes the tires better for traction but they don't last as long
|
I would have to have a shit ton of money to cause if you shave you go through tires like a fiend
|
Ok, I understand. I'm sure they are stickier than most tires but I think the sidewall is too soft. Are you going to use them for daily driving too?

Yeah they will be my DDs. I have a friend with them and he loves em and has the most tire damaging driving style of anyone I know and they have lasted a long ass time |
Ah well DD a tire and using them just for autox are two different things.
|
Right, a dedicated autocross tire usually doesn't make a good DD tire due to treadwear and rain and all that. You'd have a ton of grip though.
|
unfortunatly I can't spring for an all around race tire at this point :( Maybe when I make a bit more money and can justify getting some race slicks but for now they have to work on and off the track anything will be better then my 205 pirelli p3000s
