Stealing Wheels: The ifs and or buts.

When I bought my Mustang it came with 4 out of 5 lugs on each wheel. The reason for this is because the previous owner had to do work on it when he owned it and he never had the key for the locked lug nut because the guy he bought it from never gave it to him. So it had to be removed.

So now that I own it, like I said, there is only 4 out of 5 lug nuts on each wheel.
Basically I haven't got around to buying the lockable lug nuts yet and I was just wondering about the risk of someone taking your wheels in the night or something. I thought the idea was pretty far fetched because in order to take wheels off a Mustang, you need a jack right. I mean you can't just unscrew the lugs and take off the wheels by hand right. I mean the car is placing more than a little bit of wait onto the wheel against the pavement. If anyone knows more about this let me know!

Yes, if you park somewhere sketchy people can jack your rims. The could easily use a small lightweight jack like the one you discovered in your trunk. I highly recommend getting a set of lucking lugs and throwing them on, not that running with 4/5 lugs in incredibly dangerous, but it does put an unnecessary added stress on the other fasteners.

Other than the fact that you are just simply missing a lug nut which isn't good, I wouldn't worry about it that much unless you live around people you don't trust. But, I thought I lived in a good neighborhood and my car got broken into twice (30 days apart by the same person, really just one bad apple). You should go the nearest auto parts store or place that carries locking lug nuts or atleast buy some regular lug nuts.

Hahaha see that pic would have been take in a very bad neighborhood. That kind of stuff doesn't happen where I live. My mom did get her wheel caps on her Stingray stolen in the middle of the night when the car was parked in our driveway but that was really random and odd, considering it did sit parked in the same drive way for over 25 years without an incident. I basically just wanted to know if it was easily possible and if it can only be done with jacks or big ass rocks like in that pic you posted I don't think I have anything to worry about. Theneighborhood in that pic probably has guys that drive around with jacks looking to complete that exact task and in my neighborhood that kind of thing would only happen if it was the right time, right place and someone was feeling greedy, but even then, they wouldn't have a jack or a big ass rock.

I guess Chris ("Jacktheripper") lives in a nice neighborhood, and his wifes car was repeatedly broken into...so don't judge a book by it's cover. I thought I lived in a nice neighborhood and there has been more car and house break-ins here than when I lived in a "bad" neighborhood. Just get locking nuts and play it safe.

To be honest its best to never park your car in a sketchy area because even with lock nuts, they can still steal your rims just by spraying a freezing substance on the nut and hitting it with a hammer, although it does always help to have atleast one lock nut just to avoid the unusual theif who isnt prepared.
