im getting new rims...17x9...ill keep the stock rims and put some slicks on a pair of the old rims. Is a 17x8 rim too small or not a good idea to put a slick on?

as long as the slick you get is properly sized for the rim. the better question is, is there a slick made in the size you need for that rim? I have no idea...never looked into it.

I would go with a 15 for slicks if I were you but that is just my opinion.
