Little bigger and wider tires for stock rims?

I just got a 2000 Mustang Coupe in Electric green and want to run a little wider/ bigger tire on the stock rims. I like the stock look of the car I just
want it to look a little beefier but stock. It has 205 65 15's now.
What can I reasonably go up to on those rims?

Thanks to those of you who have helped me so far - It really makes me feel welcome.

I'd say a 225 width tire. its not gonna look too much different though.

Green Hornet 06-27-2007 04:05 PM

What would you say?
a 225 65 15
OR
a 225 60 15

the 225/60's sidewall will closely match what you have now, and you'll have a tiny bit wider tire.

with the 225/65 your sidewall will be a bit taller than what you have now and you'll have a tiny bit wider tire.

Thanks for the tire info. I've got some other things I'm going to fix up but then I'm going to get some new treads.

if i might make a suggestion. Get a set of used GT wheels you can get them used with tires normaly for around 400-500bucks. I mean if your a v6 guy thats totaly the way to go. You can even paint them black, green, silver, etc.. yourself to make them different. Then you get 17"s newer tires, and bigger meats all in one cheap package. I mean thats the way i would do it.

Green Hornet 06-27-2007 07:29 PM

That's a great Idea.
But does the 2000 stock 15 X 7 (6 cyl. coupe) wheel:

Interchange with the 2000 GT 17 X 8 wheel?:

With respect to offset and bolt pattern/circle - Will it work?

It certainly would give me the stock look and give me a wider/bigger tire

yes you can upgrade to any GT/Cobra wheel without any problems. However, you will have to recalibrate your computer for the difference in wheels. Your local ford garage could do it cheap or free.

Only if the total hight of the tire is different then the factory wheel which it should not as ford makes them all the same size for a reason. You can use this calc below to type in the old tire size verses the new size and see if they are the same over all height which they should be.

i have a friend selling his stock bullits with tires...

and i just did the tire calculator

from my stock 245/45/17 to my 275/35/18 are pretty much the exact same diameter so it shouldnt mess the computer up

spike_africa 06-28-2007 10:51 AM

Yeha ford does that for a reason, thats why when you get larger rims etc.. you get tires with a shorter sidewall so the high stays the same.

Like i said if i was a v6 guy thats what i would do. I mean teal beast got a set of GT wheels with tires for 200bucks from a guy i knew. Its the best deal. Anything is better then v6 wheels.

mustangvsix 06-28-2007 09:23 PM

Yeah definately don't waste the money on getting 225's you wont' really notice a huge difference. Do like spike said and get a set of 17'' rims and tires off a GT or Cobra. They will work just fine with out messing anything up, and you wont' need to change a thing.

I just bought a set of (17 X 8) 2000 GT wheels for the Green Hornet.
Like this:

I should have them in a week or so.
What tires should I run that are good for everyday driving and not too expensive?
It should dress up the car a bit which is stock with the (15 X 7):

- not to mention the handling will probably improve. Plus I get a stock look.
I was thinking about running a set of 255 45R 17's - that should be OK with the 3% and under limit.

Let me tell you, take those V6 wheels, bring them outside, and use them as target practice for a .50 caliber rifle, they're utter shit and I can't wait to rid my car of their filth...

hehe :kekekegay:

And there's some things you can do to clean up the look of your car whilst maintaining an overall stock appearance (Don't know why anyone would do that though), for instance,I doubt your V6 has foglights so take a razor and cut out the little flexible horizontal pieces in the foglight spaces, chop off a few inches of your exhaust tip to hide it so it doesn't stick under the bumper like it's spying on the cars behind you, get a shorter antenna - 14" or 8", and lower the angle of your wiper blades so that they are almost sitting on the cowling and not on the clear part of the windshield at all.

And IMO I'd replace those chrome housing headlights with some late 2000 Cobra style headlights with the black housing and amber corners..or just go /w black housing and clear corners.

Green Hornet 06-29-2007 04:40 PM

What wheels are you using? What size tire on them?
I ordered a new set of the black frame clear lens headlights. Right now I have a chrome drivers side and a black original on the passenger side - check the different photos of the car in this thread....
The forum is helping me get this car shaped up fast - got to love it.

PColav6 06-29-2007 05:50 PM

I have the same V6 wheels you're replacing, with 205/65/15 tires, they're crap and look too skinny on such a big car.

zigzaggthefag321 06-29-2007 08:44 PM

those stock GT wheels you got took a 245/45/ZR17 tire originally.

well for clarification your car is a 2000 so the chrome is the stocker, and the black is the replacement, as far as headlights go.

It depends on what part of the year the car was made IIRC..once the cobra R came out they started putting black housings on them, mine had black housings.
But I also think it made have had something to do with the color of the car, darker colors had chrome, lighter had black..

hmm,i really thought no mustang other then the cobra R got the black housings in 2000.

Well the GT wheels didn't work out.
So I went down to my local tire pro shop and got a set of
Michelin Pilot Exalto AS 96V tires
http://www.pbase.com/esquire/image/81431977.jpg
in size 225 60 R15. What a difference. The stance looks much better than the 205's the car handles really nice. And I'm liking the stock 15 Alloys better now. There's no question that many of you have some serious Mustang muscle street machines out there but I must say that the stock Mustang Coupe V6 feels really nice now with new treads and surely it looks much better than most of the everyday cars on the road.
It sure turn heads in the Electric Green.
Well on to dual exhaust............

zigzaggthefag321 06-30-2007 03:17 PM

Michelin FTW!!!!

nice tires.

spike_africa 06-30-2007 04:04 PM

well that sucks you should og gone with those GT take offs it would of looked nice.
