Opinions on Sumitomo brand

I am considering getting Sumitomo 245/40/18 htr with 18x9 Saleens. (all the way around)
Opinions please on the quality on this brand of tire, and perhaps opinions on this tire size with this wheel.

I have heard opinions that with this tire size you're likely to have the wheel sticking out past the tire and be in more danger of curb rash.
So what's the verdict, Good tires? Gay setup w/ too small of a tire for this wheel?

I have the 315 sumitomos on mine and they are a good tire for the $$. They dont have a ton more grip than the stock 245s, but the price was right and they are wearing pretty good. I could easily see 30K out of the tires.

You get what you pay for with sumitomos. On a 9" rim, I would get at least a 255.

I have the HTRZ 2's and love them. I would go with a 265/35/18 all the way around.

i have the HTR's as well.. and they are decent all around... but dont really shine in any one category

I dont know mine hooked pretty good, lowered the pressure down to 16lbs, I have 315/35's on a 17x10.5, and i was able to muster a 1.86 60'. but you do need to heat them pretty good...

I am curious about these as well.

I have Kumho 712's all the way around right now. I have been very happy with them. To me, they have delivered in all categories and I have a lot of confidence with them. For the price, they are awesome.

Now, I would like to go to 315's the next time around. However, Kumho does not make them in either the 712 or the MX (an upgraded tire from the 712). So, I am left with either sticking to a 285 sized Kumho OR going to the 315 Sumi. For the moment, DR's are not an option. Too concerned about using them in the rain. I just don't race too often (2 times a year), so a good, healthy street-tire is my goal.

I have hooked a 2.0 with my 712's, but never launched at the track spraying.

Dont even bother tying unless you like tire smoke.. :happy6: I would only launch on the spray on a full slick or et streets. As for tires another good option is the Nito DR's they handle like a regular radial tire in the rain, just with a little more bite at the track. They dont hook as good as a BFG or MT dr but they do work well. good luck!

I just checked the Tire Rack site and they have the Sumis HTRZ in a 315/35/17 on sale right now for $110. That seems like an insane price.

That's just not an option. For the two times a year I go to the track, I just need street tires. If a spin...I spin.

I went with the HTRZ 2's which are alot better tire. I paid $850 tax included for all four. 265/35/18's and 285/35/18's.

I hear ya, but they are not available in 315's. Also, I am not sure if I like the tread on those.

Lances03SVT 05-14-2005 06:34 PM

Yea no 315's but the tread looks bad ass :)

I'm gettin' the 17 Black bullitt replicas with the 10.5" rears.

Sumitomos are going in all the way around. 275/40 and 315/35.
