Street tires really arent that great.

Only have maybe 20 miles on my new tires ( i went with the new kuhmo SPT's) and i hate them. I knew i should of just stuck with dr's for daily driving. Now when i hit the bottle it just spins its ass off. I would bet these tires dont last past summer before i replace them some kind of drag radial again. Its been almost 2 years since i had a regular street tire on the back of my car. And i really do miss the extra traction those nitto give me. And i dont even have gears or cams and they spin in first even without the bottle. I honestly dont know why alot of you guys bother with street tires who have cams and full bolt on's or even just gears and some bolt on's. Street tires plain out suck for performance (in a straight line of course).

whitethunder46 12-22-2006 09:09 AM

i've never been on DR's, but street tires arent worth it unless you put some money into some good street tires... Pilot Sports, Gs-D3, BFG KD's

spike_africa 12-22-2006 09:17 AM

I really dought they will be much better with traction then my nittos (which are the least hooking dr out there, but the longest lasting). All i know is I am not sure how so many guys who are into modding there mustangs use street tires for track use. I used to be able to pull many low 2.0x 60's with the stock rubber when i was stock and i thought that was great till i had my first set of nittos and it put me in the high 1.8's with stock gears which isnt to bad.

All i know is tonight will be the test as i am gonna go run at the strip and see how shitty they are. im betting my best 60' might be a 2.0x if im lucky on the bottle.

O no, the Nitto's would def still be better than top street tires. But I'm saying for those looking for good traction from a street tire, you really can only get it from the ones I listed.

MattJ 12-22-2006 10:51 AM

you get what you pay for...

03gtmustang 12-22-2006 11:06 AM

Im the exact opposite. Will never invest in a set of DR's again. With my set up Ill spin with the Nittos anyways. Plus Ive got a separate rim/ tire set up for the track.

street tire is a street tire, they will never hook like a good drag radial will. I just know i should of stuck with my nittos rather then trying to do a street tire and then get some dr's for my v6 wheels. Atleast i have some tread for once.

r3dn3ck 12-22-2006 11:53 AM

Put a torque arm on your car... then street tires will be more than enough. I have a hard time spinning the tires on dry pavement. I used to be able to chirp 3rd but now I'm only just slightly spinning 2nd.

I'm way too hard on tires to use DR's.

spike_africa 12-23-2006 09:39 AM

yeah im not kean on adding more weight to an allready very heavy GT as mine has bullit wheels,leather,mach1000 and nitrous parts to add to the weigh. Its rather heavy. Its gonna be even more awosme when my 4.10 gears go in.

Icefreezen 12-23-2006 09:49 AM

YOu should have known better street tires just arent your fortay. I have the 275 Kuhmo Supras and everytime I gun it no nitrous the whole backend kicks out but i've gotten used to it and know when to let off the pedal for a split second I dont even want to imagine it on nitrous. I honestly dont feel safe taking it to the track and firing it out of the hole untill I get another set of rims with some dr's or slicks.

machnjo 12-23-2006 10:10 AM

I run GSD3s on the GT and KDWs on the Mach. I have yet to put DRs on either, but have a set of GT rims I'm planning on using for that purpose. I don't go to the track often enough to put DRs on 24/7. I agree, you get what you pay for. If your going to put street tires on, get a good quality. Of the 2 sets I have now, I like the GSD3s alot better. I ran my mach with both types and the GYs are much better traction wise IMHO.

Mustang Boy 12-23-2006 12:50 PM

what size street tire did you go with cause that could make alot of difference too

TClark22 12-23-2006 02:35 PM

lol street tires are for the street where you are supposed to just drive your car casually...lol i bet those DRs were amazing in the rain :shakeno: ...the street tires will be for dd's that drive through rain...but yea if i had a powerfull car and it wasnt a dd then i would have some DRs on it...

spike_africa 12-23-2006 02:53 PM

nittos were great in the rain in fact they were better then the stock goodyears. Of course once they got worn down alot they sucked (like any other tire). Im just amazed by how crappy traction is on street tires cause you have to remeber i have had nothing but dr's for over 2 years on my car (minus the stockers that were replaced around 4k miles after i got the car).

tire size is the same of course 275/40/17

TClark22 12-23-2006 03:02 PM

those stock goodyears blow!

youre going to hate street tires with 4.10s. with just exhuast, intake, and programmer i could roast first through second up to third with my auto. anything low profile is useless except for handling and looks as you probably already know.

spike_africa 12-23-2006 05:08 PM

LOl i think you all kinda missed the reason for my post. I know they suck its just weird going from Dr's on the back only for almost 2 years too a street tire. Hell, the last time i had street tires on my car it was totaly stock down to the filter.

Going from that to a full bolt on car with a 125shot is rediculously gay.

WaterDR 12-23-2006 06:53 PM

Those SPT's are bottom of the barrel even for Kuhmos. The Kuhmo MX is as good if not better then any DR plus they work in the rain.

I am not sold on DR's unless you go with a smaller size wheel with more rubber, you can only get soo much traction. I ran consistent 2.0's with my Kuhmos and that was with 4.10's. They were not the MX's either.

spike_africa 12-25-2006 03:24 PM

Once you get a set and run and see how much better traction is you will never go back. For you they make even more sense becuase yours is a weekend warrior only. With the nitto's on the bottle it would spin 1st but it would still pull hard forward it would bark 2nd and go and chirp 3rd and 4th. Now it totaly spins and goes slow when the nitrous hits and spins in 2nd and spins a few feet in third and barks 4th. There is alot of time being lost with the time spin and long barks between shifts. Its about time i step up the traction for the track with a real set of wheels and Dr's and or slicks.

Dude just take the V6 rims you have slap on some fatty slicks and start planning on building your rear end like I know you want to do

spike_africa 12-27-2006 07:08 AM

there only 15x7's the only slick that fits is a 26"x8x15 thats pretty small tire outback. I was looking to get 10" of tire out back.
