Oh the choices! or Ugh! the choices!

Hello everyone, first post here. Got my 2001 GT 5spd. last night...I got lucky...it has only 22k certified on the odo. Anyway...for whatever reason this GT has 16inch rims with 225/55/16 tires on it. I'll assume the previous owner liked the ones he/she bought for it so much they decided to keep them and may have sold off their stock GT 17's and these 16's were the cheap option to replace with. So...my question is this: What damn rims should I get for this thing!!! There are too many available and my head is spinning. 17 or 18 inch will work for me. I want to go offset with 10.0 or 10.5 in the rear and 9.0 for the front. I would like to stick to OE rims, but i dont see any 10.0-10.5 width from FoMoCo. Also, what's the widest front tire size/rim i can safely use, 275 SW? (stock suspension) Thanks everyone and Great site/board...nice to know its here.

Look on Mustang Tuning.com for some great wheel selections.

They're were 16's available on the stangs... so they might be stock.

IF you stagger the tires I suggest 265 for the front and 295 (for 18's) and 315 (for 17s) in the rear.

Alrighty...thanks! so that'd be 295/35(17or18)-R and 265/40(17or18)-F?

265/35/18 for the front and 295/35/18 for the rear.

275/40/17 for the front and 315/35/17 for the rear!!

Thanks gentlemen! Now to narrow the rim choices down by weight. 32lbs per 18'' wheel seems a bit high IMO. But, what the hell do I know, I work on BMW's for a living. :beerchug:

I don't think my 18's are that heavy!!

zigzaggthefag321 05-14-2006 04:57 PM

Yeah, as I look around i see that 32lbs is fairly normal for an 18 incher. I had these 20.0lb forged wheels in mind but I just cannot justify $700+ per wheel.

TClark22 05-14-2006 06:40 PM

wow my 18" chrome saleens were only 20lbs a piece

zigzaggthefag321 05-14-2006 08:32 PM

hmmm 20lbs? 18x9 right? wonder where the difference is coming from...Oh, are your Saleen wheels REAL Saleens? or replicas? Seems the more $$ for the wheel the lighter it says it is. Most of the replica wheels I have looked at seem to weigh more than the "Real" ones from Ford. But Ford doesnt make an 18x10. And Ford charges a lot for their wheels...I would buy the
10th Anniversary Cobra wheels from Ford if they made an 18x10. Looks like the 18x10 and/or the 18x9 FR500 anthracite wheels are out of stock at Mustangtuning.com anyway.

Lance, Will the 18x10 and 18x9 with those tire sizes work on a lowered GT? I plan to lower this car eventually. Thanks.

Thanks to all who helped guide my wheel/tire decisions. I ordered the FR500 17x9-front and the 17x10.5-rear. Anthracite color. Too bad they are backordered until sometime in June. "good things come to those who wait" I got them with the Sumitomo tires...275/40/17 front and 315/35/17 rear. Cant wait for them to get here...these 225/55/16's not only look stupid, but dont hook up worth a damn either. Plus, making a turn from a stoplight, even a reasonable amount of throttle swings the ass end out....fun yes, but only when its on purpose. I dunno...this car feels like more than 260hp to me. Those Nissan maxima's and 350z's are supposed to have 260hp right? Well, at least a 350z couldnt hang with this Stang....and he was trying. Neat stuff!
