cutting coils?
 

Hey guys, I am looking to lower my 01 GT vert here pretty soon and at the moment i do not have any extra cash to bet putting into the car, but a buddy of mine cut his coils on his 95 GT a coil and half up front and one coil in the rear, the ride hight looks really nice and does not seem to ride too rough like i thought it would, so i guess im asking is it a bad idea to cut stock coils?? If i do go this route what else would i need to do ex. get an alignment, c/c plates, shocks??? I am not wanting to go drasticaly low just want to get rid of the 4x4 look and it is my daily driver

Well people do it and Ford coils do have whats known as a dead coil that does nothing. You can cut that off and get around 3/4" to 1" drop that way.

if all you want is to drop ride height....cut one or two of the first coils. shouldn't effect the ride, as theses are collapsed already.

I got the same problem. I was thinking of removing the iso's top and bottom, but I didn't think that would drop it down to where I would need c/c plates would it?

If you cut more than the dead coil off, you risk an extremely hard ride and damaged shocks/struts.

You could just get a set of used MACH1/Bullit springs like me and drop your car around the same height for almost nothing. I paid $50 shipped to my door for my springs. Great track/street spring.

If you cut the coils, use a cut-off wheel not a torch, I'd cut half a coil at a time an check to see how you like it.

cutting coils works, but you do risk ruining them. I would leave the iso's in, as the suspension can get awful noisy on rough roads w/o 'em. I would recommend shopping ebay and craigslist for a set of used drop springs, or like stated above, some Mach/Bullit springs. If all you are worried about is the look, a cheap set of ebay drop coils will work just fine. I've had my ebay $100 set of 2" drop coils for 8 yrs. now, first in my Fox-body, now in my 02 coupe.

awesome guys thanks for the responses im going to check around and see if i can find some cheap use mach/bullit springs but if not ill just cut the dead coil off on all 4 and see how i like it

I've done it a few times and experience says it's a bad idea on a SN95. The stock springs are excessively soft and were built tall for that reason.

Some hints:
If you must cut coils, cut half a coil at a time or you'll be sorry.
Cut stock springs will bottom out your car on hard bumps and dips, usually on the k-member, normally with some not insignificant damage to the car in the process.

You made a good choice to find proper springs, don't turn dumb and go cutting coils. Be patient and you can find good springs for cheap.

i didnt know machs were lowered with the bullitt suspension,, theres a mach in my local junkyard im gonna try n get now,,

About cutting coils,, it seems logical id go small first like everyone else suggests.

I have seen people with lowriders around here heat springs and fill the bed and engine bay with sandbags to make trucks lower for cheap.. but they dont care how they wear tires or anything,, they dont DD em so they dont care. Dont go that route.

I'm actually going to cut a little bit off the dead coil on my front Mach1 springs because they sit just a hair to high in the front. Otherwise my stance is great for a DD.
