I'm going to sell the Bullitt and buy a damn truck.

On Monday, I shot a sparkplug out of the cylinder head. No problem, got it fixed that night, and it's back running great again. Come to find out, this is a known issue that Ford has had with many '01-02 Mustangs, F150's, and all the Cobra engines. But they didn't recall it, didn't do anything about it, so owners are now forced to fix it themselves.

Last night, I'm cruising with the wife, and the seatbelt locks up on her. It will only retract, but won't extend. So I figure it's twisted, and I'll fix in this morning. Get out there this morning, and tear the interior out to get to it, and it's not twisted, it's just locked up. I get on the old trusty internet, and low-and-behold, another common Ford problem that they have not recalled, and have no intentions of fixing. The only fix is to buy the entire assembly at a cost of $150. Luckily, my friend is building a racecar and stripped the interior, and it has charcoal seatbelts, so he's giving me one of his.

I have spent over a grand in the last month in upgrades and maintenance, and now 2 manufacturer's problems popped up right after. I love spending money on the Bullitt, but damn, I wonder how many more known problems that should have been recalled am I going to have to fix along with normal maintenance?

lolz, a buddy of mine has shot a grand total of 3 plugs into orbit in his f250, all from different cylinders, all not causing any damage to the cylinder luckily. One left a nice sized dent under the hood:D. Their is really only 3 options: buy new heads(expensive), buy fords helical insert and install(really ghetto), or just replace the plug and pray it doesn't happen again and if i does pray i doesn't damage anything:dunno:

this has happened to alot of 4.6's, it happeened to my friends, just drivng and started missing,, looked and we heard a ticking and it was the plug firing on the side of the engine block.

The timesert kit is actually a very nice repair, if done right. That's what the heads should have had in them from the factory. $225 for the kit, and I'm prepared for the other 7 to pop. Or when my heads come off, I'll do them all while they're off.

There was no putting the sparkplug back into mine. There wasn't a single thread left in the head. I used the timesert kit, cut the heads out, put the insert in, and sealed it. I'm very confident in that repair. It's the helicoil kit that I don't trust.

Sounds like you're figuring it out though. Sorry to hear that you're having so much trouble with it. They're such sexy cars...

Any car is going have its problems.

They have been easy problems to fix, fortunately. It's just annoying that known problems continue to be that way. You would think with the number of 4.6 and 5.4 Mustangs and F150 owners complaining about the heads, Ford would at least have fixed them for the loyal owners.

I'll never sell the Bullitt, I would like for it to break things before I save and spend all my money on mods, and then 2 days later, something breaks.

Personally im not a fan of any of the the insert type repairs, feels like a bandaid on a broken leg to me, the heads should have just had more thread touching the sparkplug from factory, but good luck.

That sucks you are having issues. I'm sure though with the amount of mustang and f150s out there compared to the amount of people who have actually had a spark plug blowout, probably doesn't amount up to enough to actually have a recall. There usually has to be a certain percentage to justify a recall. Not saying you're to blame, but Ford could come back and say that someone didn't change their plugs correctly and whatnot. I've read about probably 10-20 cases of this happening on the forums, but that's nothing compared to the amount of mustangs on the road. Hopefully nothing else happens man.

no kidding....3 threads on 260 stock horsepower....come on now...and thread lock is a real bad idea.....if you put anti seize on too thick it falls into the combustion chamber.....however it is a mustang....and i luv em

hey bud this is a real old thread, concentrate on the newer ones.

it's a 9-10 year old car... jeeze. 10 years of reliable service and god knows how many spark plug changes in an aluminum head, how much excessive torque, how many times anti-seize wasn't used. Things wear, threads in aluminum wear extra bad. I agree ford should have put the time-sert setup in the heads to begin with but really... they had 100,000 mile major tune-up intervals. They didn't plan on people pulling the plugs 8-10 times in a car's life.
