Subwoofer and Amp setup
 

I sold my car, I have a 96 GT now, but I'm looking to get rid of it for something smaller and less gas guzzling. Anyway, I should have something new in a month or so, something more comfortable and not as fast so I don't get myself into anymore trouble...


I'm looking to have a really nice system in the car, so I want to get some audio experts' views on what I should get.

I'm planning on getting aftermarket speakers to replace factory ones, powered by an amp, but that part I have under control. Its the Sub/Amp setup that I need help with.

I had a 10" pioneer 350w sub with a 300w jensen amp, and it hit pretty hard, but I want something thats gonna be louder and better sounding. I want 2 12" subs, and I think it would be best if its powered by a single large amp.

Problem:

I don't know what wattage subs will match up with what wattage amp. I don't want to have too much power, and I don't want to have not enough power. If someone could help me, and give me a few options for the setup, that would be great. I don't need a specific sub or amp to buy, more of what the specs should be so that I can shop around for the specific ones I like. Also, should i go with a single box for two subs, or two boxes to individually put the subs in?

Why the fuck do you need two 12" subs in a car?

I have never understood this.

I have ONE 12" for a 26' x 20' room and it shakes the whole room. Why do you need two for an area roughly the same size as a bathroom?

all you need in any car is one 10" with 350 watts max...otherwise you are either doing it to try to be cool, or you are a worthless thug trying to impress some hood rat bitch that only wants you for the money you used to have because you spent it on a system that makes no sense.

If you are getting something that isn't a car I got 2 12" rockford's and a amp to go with it for sale if you are interested but 2 12"s are too big for a car like they say above.

What wattage subs will match up with what wattage amp? What? It's not like a 1000watt amp constantly pushes out 1000watts of power. You see, there's this thing in electronics called "gain".

It doesn't matter why the fuck I want to get 2 12" subs and an amp, I just wanted to know which ones would match up well. I didn't ask whether you would do it or not, what you think sounds good, etc. I know what a 10" with 350 watts sounds like... I know what a 10" with a 600 watt amp sounds like too. That's not what I asked, I don't really care what your opinion on what it needed is...

its not very hard....

the size of your x2 12" subs (exp. 1000 watt each) your going to want to get a 2000 watt amp to really put out the power of the subs.

If you get a 1000watt amp, you would only be pushing 500watts to each sub (1000 watts in total)...But RMS also counts too :smokin:

If you were to bridge both 12" 1000 watt subs to that one 1000 watt amp. It would be overheating and shutting off and on and maybe even blow a fuse.

Or you could just buy one 12" subs@ 1000watts and buy a 1000 watt amp. And just bridge that one, you would pushing 1000 watts to that sub...

I have 2 12's in my car and it takes a pretty good sized box for them to sound right. The box needs to be so big that you have to install it by removing your rear seat, which isnt hard because it pops right out then a couple bolts holds the back of the seat on. After you get a box that size, it needs to be about a foot and a half deep, it takes up a lot of the trunk room but you can run low wattage subs and not eat up your alternator. However, after I have my box installed I don't have much trunk room at all.

I have 2 100W RMS Memphis street edge subs.
A 1000W autotek amp, which is more like 100RMS x 2 channels.

And it's plenty, you can have too much bass at times. If I were you i'd just go with some walmart sony xplod subs if theyre cheaper than what your lookin at and pick up an amp there thats a good wattage. Just remember, you need a pretty good sized box for two 12's. Also DO NOT Have the box divided with a center divider or they wont work together and it will dampen the sound A LOT!

OP, the best way to figure out what you're asking is to listen to different setups in person. It's not hard at all to find people with systems and ask them if you can hear it. Personally, my favorite sub brands are Kicker, JL, Fi, and Alpine. Only amp i've ever run is a Kenwood and it works great. Make sure whatever amp you get is a mono D class. And also, in most cases, when it comes to car audio, you get what you pay for. Stay the fuck away from Walmart.

If you're going to use a sealed box, you will want to divide the box so each sub has it's own chamber. What Krenogin said is only for a ported box. I'd reccommend sealed because it will give you a much much much cleaner and tighter bass. The bass will be loud as hell with a ported box, but it sounds ridiculous and makes your music sound awful, imo.

I listen to all styles of music and its perfect. It's a matter of preference. The best box style ever is bandpass, but that's expensive or very hard to make one.

I've had the same system for 4 years and had no desire to upgrade, and never had any failing parts, so I don't see how its horrible.

The loudest* box style is bandpass. Loudness =/= quality. It IS a matter of preference though, but personally, I choose quality sound over all.

Not sure what I should look for in an amp for these... Those are the specs for 1 speaker. So if the recommended amp power for one speaker is 200-400, should I do 400-800 watt amp for 2 12's? Also, are the recommending those numbers as the RMS power or regular (double the RMS)?

The way I understood it, it looks like I should pick up an 800 watt amp... but maybe I'm wrong?

Although i feel ashamed of what im about to say, considering my ricer status, im going to have to agree with Zigzagg. A 10 with 350 is all you need. MY car has 1 10" at 400 and it slams, great for drives to and from college, or apparently hookin up with hood rats. But before any marvels at my character loss, i do have a flip flop trunk hinge, red fiberglass enclosure, and red LEDs all up in the trunk :D But Zig hit it right on that one, or just get an exhaust system, cuz nothing is more beautiful than a v8 with borla header back at 5000 in 2nd gear...

Why not just stop by a local stereo shop and get there opinion first hand, I would think they should be able to point you in the right direction or head on over to www.crutchfield.com and you should be golden instead of taking the word of many internet peeps!
