How do you hide a radar detector?

I just bought a Cobra something radar detector from my buddy and I can't seem to hide the cable. Any suggestions? I'm not about to start cutting holes in my dash board or anything drastic like that, but I'll do just about anything else to hide the wire. It gets all tangled up when I shift.

Tape 08-21-2009 11:54 PM

cobra huh, you will get a ticket.

I have a direct wire and will need to snap some pics instead of trying to explain.

spike_africa 08-22-2009 05:28 AM

You can hard wire it to the car. Just tap into a power source and then run the power wire up the A pillar and then in the headliner in the front. Then run the wire to the mirror and have it come down right there. And that pretty much hides most of it.

Brontobyte 08-22-2009 08:37 AM

I don't think that they're illegal in New York State but I'm not entirely sure. I'm not too worried about it if they are anyways. I just needed to hide the wire, which I did. I just plugged it in, put the excess wire through the corner crack where the shifter trim meets the stereo trim and put all the excess in there. Then I ran the cable through the passenger side of the stereo trim and shoved it in with a quarter, then hooked it up and called it a day.

The only thing I don't like is that it doesn't turn off with my car. Ether one of my cigarette thingys. I plugged them in both when the car was off and it stays on. Not really a big deal, just annoying to unplug it every time I'm done.

I may also hard wire it, I'm not sure how or where, but Something with a switch maybe. I'll let you guys know.

I got pulled over like 3 times already with my radar! Im thinking they're just useless!

x04V6x 08-22-2009 09:10 AM

I have yet to be pulled over with my Escort Passport. When it comes to radars you just gotta spend a little more to get one that's good. I love my Passport. I remember one time me and my friend had just walked outside to leave and my Passport was going off so we waited to see what it was. about 15 seconds later it bumps up to full signal and we saw a cop pass by my house. This thing works ridiculously well and I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes to avoid cops.

DaGonz 08-22-2009 11:02 AM

The Cobra radar dectector is a POS.

Go with either an Escort Passport or Solo 2 (battery powered, no cords) or get a Valentine 1. They cost more, but so do tickets and points on your license!

Same thing I did. Looks clean as can be. and is out of my driving sight line.

Beltronics is a great brand as well. Look at around 300 bucks but my friend's one NEVER failed him even for lasers when you have to slam the breaks cause their like 60 ft in front of you lolz...

spike_africa 08-22-2009 02:55 PM

Got to have a good detector and be smart about when speeding and you won't get a ticket. I have no had a ticket since I got my V1 and smarted up.

K.G.B. 08-22-2009 04:21 PM

no wonder!! mine only cost me $60 lol! how much are we talking about for one that you know wont fail?

x04V6x 08-22-2009 05:45 PM

$300 is the cheapest Escort, it's the one I have and I trust that thing completely. other Escort models and the V1's vary from $300-500

Or you could just drive the speed limit.. Even cheaper.

True, but on very long trips, like when I went to NC, I saved 2 hours of time I would of been sitting in the car. Just by going 85mph over 70mph.

The key to speeding and not getting tagged by the police is to not stick out when you do it. Use your turn signals, change lanes slowly, try to stay in the right lane as often as possible, and don't go so much faster then the other cars that you clearly look like your hauling ass, and never be the only car on the road or be the only car up front speeding.I use the rabbit method where I look for another car that is going my speed and let them get a 1/2 mile ahead and then pace them so the police see him first and not me. Since I smarted up and started doing this I have not had a ticket in 5+ years now.

Of course having a good detector like the Valentine1 also helps.

Words of wisdom. When me and my friends go up to Albany (45 minute trip) we usually get there in >30 minutes because we all drive like assholes. The first time I went up, I was doing no less then 85mph the whole way up and at some times 90'ish. Surprisingly, I've never seen a cop on I-90 in the 20+ times I've went up. But you never know. I'm usually in the middle of the 10+ car pack because I figure they're either going to get the first person or the last person.

Kyanbi 08-23-2009 08:28 AM

Never seen a cop on the I-90? Damn... over here near Buffalo and Rochester they're crawling around like insects Bronto! I live about thirty minutes outside of Rochester and on a commute into the city it's not uncommon to see three sitting on the Thruway shooting radar and/or laser right out of their window.

And Spike nailed it on the head. Just because you may have a $400 radar detector doesn't make you invulnerable. You also have to be smart with the way you use it. I got two speeding tickets in two consecutive days last spring break when I was home, and needless to say, I cannot get another between now and roughly next Christmas or my license will get suspended. I don't have a radar detector yet, but you'll be your ass I've smartened up with the way I drive, especially on the interstate. Spike has some good tips, I'd follow them :)

garrett01001 08-24-2009 11:05 AM

+1 for spikes words of wisdom

Also, know the area.

I know a "big" road where for a good quarter mile or so there are never any cops. I've gotten up to 110mph on this road, posted is 55mph. Luckily this area is an inbetween for 3 cities and no cops patrol it because it's empty, except for the road of course!

Just drive safely and don't stick out like spike said and you'll be good with or without a radar

ive do the same thing as to follow other speeders but keep a good distance away from them (maybe like 3 bus lengths). And it works because one day. It happened. I was following a speeder and then all of a sudden my detector goes off and i see a state trooper u-turning. Im shitting bricks now :o. So then i just let off the gas and go 70-73mph (we were going about 90mph). Cop comes behind me for a few seconds and just goes on the other lane to stop the other speeder in front. I didnt pull over right away because then that will show them im guilty :smokin:

But there have been times were i follow speeders and never get pulled over. Going 85+

blackhorse 08-24-2009 11:45 AM

Guys, there's nothing on the market that will defeat a radar or laser (lydar) speed measuring system that some police departments have. I can't tell you how many times I've pulled over people who tell me their detector never went off. That's because I use the passive capabilities of the radar in my unit. I do not transmit until I see someone that is obviously speeding, then hit the on button just long enough to register and lock in your speed. Once your detector actually activates to notify you of radar being used, I've already clocked your speed. And when I use lydar, your detector will never pick it up. With lydar, I can clock you from over 1/2 mile away and your detector will never "see" it. You can pay $500 on a detector and it's only good if the police want you to know if they are in the area gunning. Just thought I'd share that with you.

That's probably true in bigger cities, but around here where I live I don't believe anyone has stuff like that. Most towns around here don't even have laser, only the highway patrol has laser and most city cops drive around with their radar on.

3.8LMustang 08-24-2009 12:50 PM

with laser guns it too late but they do have laser jammers for that :p lol

but thats if you want to spend alot of cash money

Leonide 08-24-2009 02:04 PM

i have a tried and true method for speeding.

never go 5 over the limit. i follow that rule, never get pulled over. ever. :D *knock on wood*

hotshot13422 08-24-2009 02:23 PM

Didn't read all of this thread, but i have the solution to your police woes. Don't break the law. Don't speed and you won't need a detector. You won't have to pay for a 200 dollar ticket, a 400 radar, or acquire any points on your license. It's not that hard, i promise

krazypony 08-25-2009 08:27 AM

I am unable to drive my car and not speed, its like a pre-requisite to do so...

I drive about 5-10 over always!

Laser Interceptor is an active jammer, which means it sends out beams blocking police lasers, as opposed to radar detectors that will only warn you your speed has been measured. Laser Interceptor is an LIDAR triggered Jammer that transmits a Jamming Beam only upon detection of a LIDAR signal and does so for the duration of that signal and then immediately disengage when that signal is no longer detected. Laser Interceptor will then immediately reengage again upon the detection of another further LIDAR Signal(s). Laser Interceptor consists of two units. Each unit consists of a receiver and a transmitter. Both are installed on the front of the vehicle. Additional sensors can be purchased to protect the rear of the vehicle as well. Every time the device is turned on, it performs a self test after which welcome sound is played. The transceiver unit has two built-in sensors that are sensitive to laser beams. When the sensor receives a laser beam, it forwards the impulse to a microprocessor, which then analyzes it and sends corresponding impulses to transmitter LASER.

NeedACobra 08-25-2009 01:26 PM

I just dont drive more than 5 over anymore...Gotta be safe. Theres a couple things I dont have that I positively need to be driving and I like to attract the least amount of attention to myself these days until I can get those two key things fixed....for like the third time. haha. But it pisses me off when Im going 5 over and some asshole is riding my ass, gives me the finger, or shitty looks because hes doing 10-15 over in his minivan.

garrett01001 08-26-2009 08:34 AM

Active Radar Jammers:
There is one company that is manufacturing an active radar jammer and Roy's review of this product is available by clicking here.
Although the device was effective at jamming during the testing, several clients have had follow-up conversations with Radar Roy complaining that the unit would fall out of frequency and that they could not obtain support.
Another problem with this active radar jammer is that it is a federal felony to own and/or sell one. The Federal Communications Commission could fine you upwards of $50,000 and you could be imprisoned for up to five years.
Active Laser Jammers:
There are several good active laser jammers that do work very well at jamming police lidar and there are no federal laws prohibiting their use.
However several states that include Nebraska, Minnesota, Utah, California, Oklahoma, Virginia, Colorado, Illinois and Washington DC have passed their own laws prohibiting their use.
To view the testing reports of active laser jammers, click here.

I like how people say don't speed it's the easiest thing to do. It is not!

The only thing one should NOT do while speeding is to lane hop between cars in bumper to bumper traffic in which the riders of all types in NE Philly are notorious for (I-95 corridor), there could be children in another car that you can jeapordize their lives or anyones life.

This quote by Spiike Africa is the best advise on here by far...

I've got no radar and I speed all the time, never been pulled over yet "knock on wood", since I owned my stang.

On a side note: why hasn't anyone created a "knock on wood" icon?

if anyone here spends more then $1000 on a radar/lidar jammer i'm gonna kick them in the @$$. that's crazy
