Not all Turtle Wax products suck!

I am normally not crazy about Turtle Wax products at all. Almost everything I've ever used by them has basically been average or less-than-average, but this time I can say differently.

This weekend, I finally got to try the Turtle Wax Black Box kit. It comes with two small applicators, two spray detailers, a pre-wax paint cleaner, and black wax. It retails for $19.99 at AutoZone.

http://www.turtlewax.com/img/product...2_1_4_28_1.jpg

I must say, this shit kicks major amounts of ass. I wax my car once a month and I have tried several different kinds of waxes. Mother's, Meguiar's, Zaino, Turtle Wax Ice to name a few, and none except for Meguiar's has given my car a shine as deep and black as the Black Box did.

Time Taken: 3 hours, but I was taking my time. This was one of the times when I genuinely enjoyed waxing my car.
Steps: Apply cleaner wax using one applicator, let dry to a haze. Spray detailer onto cloth or directly onto the car and remove wax. Apply Carnauba wax using the other applicator, let dry to a haze. Spray detailer onto cloth or car and remove wax.
Downsides: The cleaner/detailer/wax is all colored black. It is quite messy and will get on your hands, but it washes off easily and it's nothing that a pair of gloves can't take care of. So anyone that does not have a black car should not even think about using this product. Even the spray detailer is colored black. It's like a black mist. I used almost an entire pack of 25 microfiber towels and I haven't washed them yet, so I don't know if the wax comes out of fabric yet.
Upsides: It filled in a lot of the swirl marks and fine scratches, but of course that's only temporary which is fine by me. The paint felt like silk and looked like glass afterwards. Definitely the best wax I have ever used along with Meguiar's #6 Cleaner wax, Meguiar's #5 Glaze, and Meguiar's #26 Wax.

All in all, I will definitely be using this product again. I was very impressed. So all you guys with black cars, I definitely recommend that you give this wax a try.

I know, guys, I know. Sorry that there are no pictures. I still don't know where the hell my camera is. :( You can bet your asses that at the next meet, I will be using this wax and Ryan can take some pictures of it.

Let's put it this way, this weekend I took the car to a non-judging show and I got shitloads of compliments on how good the car's paint looked, how shiny it was, and how deep the black was. I am REALLY impressed with this wax. It's awesome. There was another guy there with a Mustang similar to mine and his car didn't look nearly as good as mine did, even though he said he had it professionally waxed that morning. :D:smokin:

My car in my signature had the Meguiar's #6 Cleaner wax, Meguiar's #5 Glaze, and Meguiar's #26 Wax on it at that time. The Turtle Wax Black Box looks just as good, if not better.

@ Steeda97: I just follow the directions on all of the wax bottles. I wash, clay, wash, wax. That's about it. I don't use a machine. It's all sweet lovin' by hands. :p

I still don't understand claybars...we should make a thread devoted to that just so people like me know what the hell is going on with that stuff.

I might make one now. I think that's a good idea.

I prefer Mother car care crap. Just preferance. Then I tried Nanotech detailers... they work just as good but they're a 'lil bit cheaper. I don't really stick to one brand with anything though.

It's extremely easy. Get a cheap "foam gun" from walmart or lowes and fill it with soap, knead the clay out (spray the surface with the "foam" first) and slide it along the paint surface. If you start feeling it grab the paint the surface isn't wet enough. You'll have to knead the clay 5-10 times if not more to clay the whole car, but it's just that easy.

If your impressed by Turtle Wax product by hand imagine a much higher quality product applied by machine.

I use Pinnacle products, its not too expensive but its pretty decent. Plus my Porter Cable :p

I took my car to a professional detailer at the last meet a few weeks ago. They used that expensive-ass Teflon wax applied by machine and it didn't look nearly as good as it does now. It looked all right, but I was not as impressed with it as I was with the Turtle Wax, that's for sure.

As far as I'm concerned, this wax is 'high quality' considering the results I received and the price I paid for it. I'm no brand whore and if something works for me, I will not hesitate to say it does. If I can get results this good by using my own two hands and a $20 wax, I'm sticking to it. :p

I made the claybar thread and put Evan's links in it. :D

I think the problem that you will have with the Turtle Wax is going to be the longevity of the wax/sealer. Turtle wax has always made good product, but typically the shine only lasts a short time and the protection is minimal compared to other "professional" products. For example, Turtle wax Ice has a great shine, but it offers basically no protection and is all but gone within about a month or two.

Val won't have this issue since she apparently waxes her car once a month (which is insane) lol. :p

People with a life on the other hand have to sacrifice some of that shine for the extra UV protection that other brands offer.

Steeda, I know you said that you use pinnacle, but have you tried this? http://www.poorboysworld.com/whitediamond.htm I used it a few weeks ago on the GT and it looks amazing. I love every Poor Boys product that I've ver used.

I can't say anything about the longevity of this particular wax, being as how it's only been on my car for 3 days. I can tell you that it is beading up very, very well. But like you said, since I wax my car frequently, I don't worry about the longevity of the wax. And I do have a life, thank you very much :p.

I know that if I used a more expensive product that has a much longer protection life, I wouldn't have to wax as often, but that doesn't matter to me. I'm a shine junkie who likes to wax her car. Is that such a bad thing? :o

I don't even care about all this talk of expensive products and longevity. I'm going to stick with this Turtle Wax and the Meguiar's products I mentioned and just be happy with it. :)

White Diamond Eh?

If you think it looks good now you should spend some money and get the good stuff. You won't believe how much better the non over the counter products are out there.

No doubt!

rebelprettyboy 06-25-2009 05:19 PM

Man I just used this today.

And im overly pleased with the job it did.

From the wash, claying, and going through wat came int he box took about 2:45
works really well.

No pics right now, but I left the car parked in the shop at work and ill try and get some pics 2morrow.

Had to leave it at work cuz i live in West Texas and its impossible to keep a car clean.

I've never had luck with turtle wax products....but glad you are happy with this kit. Was it hard to remove? Any streaks?

poorboy's products are great! Pretty cheap too!

if you have deeper pockets, try Wolfgang Fuzion wax or Pinnacle Souverign wax. Both are amazing on dark paint!

Richie1957 06-27-2009 12:32 AM

I tried the Turtle Wax ICE products and they are great.
Just apply and wipe off in 3 to 4 minutes.
It is also meant to polish the rubber and plastic as well as the paint.

I just applied the black box on my mustang, well it took 3 hours but i have to say that was the best time i've ever invested in cleaning / waxing the pony, that stuff i amazing looks like a new paintjob. I will defentily buy a couple of those before they stop making them. well worth the $20

mustangman95gt 01-26-2010 01:51 PM

You know for us living in Florida it is a whole different story, because with our weather you want your car always to look the best in sunshine

You make it sound like I live and breathe to wax my car. I always do my waxing on Saturdays and Sundays, if time permits. I try to wax once a month, but I haven't been able to lately.

Relatively new to the whole "Mustang Love" thing...

My dad made me wash and wax his truck every week. I just thought that was what you were supposed to do so, as an adult, I wash and wax my car every weekend, weather permitting.

Am I waxing it too much?

I think waxing it every week is a bit much, but it shouldn't hurt the car if that's what you're worried about. I usually try to wash mine every weekend and wax once a month. Haven't been able to do either lately. Don't really have to anymore since I got a better quality cover for it.

A good way to not have to wax all the time is to use detailing spray inbetween regular waxing. Helps keep that 'just waxed' look, without having to do all the work. It doesn't protect like a wax does, though.

xxlranger 01-29-2010 01:22 PM

As long as I'm not hurting it, I'm happy. No kids, no wife, and I actually like the ritual of washing and waxing.

On your suggestion, I got the black box today. I plan on trying it out on the first warm, non raining day off.

Good deal! Follow the directions on the box and you'll love it. Make sure you have some latex gloves around if you don't want black wax underneath your nails! :)

Edit: By the way, these two pictures taken by Switch are results from the Black Box.
