VHT Nite-Shades?
Anyone here ever actually used it before? I'm considering smoking the tails, not blacking them out, just smoked.. I imagine that it would be fairly difficult to get an even coat with a rattle can, especially something that is semi-transparent.. Anyone have any input?

I used it on my foglights and side reflector, and my pony. It's good stuff. I'd use and adhesion promoter on the tails, then spray them and clearcoat it a LOT, there's a chance the coverage won't be even but I didn't notice it in my fogs. You could just go with smoked vinyl tint, though.

i helped a buddy tint his tails with that stuff, its good stuff and came out looking very nice

you won't regret it. Kevin, how many cans of VHT do you think I would need to do the tails? Two? Do you really have to clear them? I like the matte finish that I've seen on some of them and the clear is going to make them shiny.. :( http://vi.ebaydesc.com/ebaymotors/ws...at%3D&caz.html |

$60 for a couple of pieces of vinyl tint? No thanks.. That's probably a $50 profit margin for them, at least. I'll go buy a roll of 3M window tint and do it myself before I'll buy those.
You could skip the clear, I would think. Just do very light coats and make sure you wait for it to dry completely in between coats and you should be okay. You can get even coats with a rattle can. Make sure you spray at least 6"-8" away from the surface and try to use the same amount of pressure on the nozzle. That's what I do when I have to spray paint things and I haven't had any problems with that method. You can always purchase some paint thinner to remove the spray-tint if you think it is not to your standards. |
i used one can. i also used the whole can for both tails and they came out pretty dark. i also had some dust flying around so that messed up the finish and the clear coat didnt help out much. whateve it looks good from a distance. i did mine in a rooom that was lit by a 100 watt bulb and that wasnt enough light for me to get a even coverage as well so make sure you do them in sunlight.

I used one can to black out tail-lights.

I used one can for my tails. I'll post a photo. I haven't buffed them yet though so they aren't as shiny as I would like.

This is the only photo I have right now (parked next to the crazy GT) since I am at work and it's from far away. Sorry! But I'm happy with the VHT Nite-Shade. |
That's the most useless photo ever layla. Haha :P
Evan, you should only need one can. And I would clearcoat them to protect them, I'm sure you can find a matte clearcoat somewhere. |

Here is a closer photo from my cell phone. The car needs to be washed, the camera phone sucks, and I need to buff them so they are shinier... but I'm happy with the outcome for the most part! One can of VHS Nite Shades and a few coats of clear. |
Just make sure you clearcoat it several times.

Not to hijack the thread, but I'm thinking about using this on my sidemarkers and turn signals in place of the tint.
Would I have to remove the markers and signals, or could I leave them on and spray it? |
You can leave them on, but you need to mask off the entire area around it because of over spray. If you can take them out, I would do that.
When I did my rear bumper reflectors I masked off the quarter panel to the side window, and the sides of the rear bumper and tail lights. |
