painting spoiler...good idea?
i've been looking around online to see if i could find a mach 1 spoiler for sale anywhere but to no avail. anyway, i was looking at the pictures of them and they look to be just like the gt/v6 spoilers but just painted black...so would it be a bad idea to think of painting my current spoiler black?
Is it the 99-00 or 01-04 spoiler? The mach 1 chin is just a flat black 01-04.
The 99-00 looks like shit in any case. Nothing wrong with painting it yourself as long as you prep it right. |
its an 04...
how exactly would i go about prepping it? would i have to get the factory paint off and then put on a coat of primer or something like that? |
Sand it, clean it, spray a primer, spray the paint and it should be good. Painting things like this is not a hard things to do. Go checkout hotrod.com they just did a nice paint special and it covers everything.
alright cool thanks guys...another question...i have a matte black stripe on the hood...should i go with a gloss or a flat paint for the spoiler in your opinions?
Flat.
alright thanks everyone...lol one more question tho. where should i look for the paint and primer?
Don't do flat the mach1s are matte black which does have a slight shine to it.

i used flat black rattle can. It greys out all the time and requires constant attention with Armor All to keep the wet flat black look. I'd take it to a paint shop and have them put a flat black + clear on it.
hmm...by rattle can do you mean just like a standard bottle of spray paint or something different?
He means your basic rattle and spray aresol cans. Like the ones you find at Ace hardware and places like that.
ok so ill stay away from that stuff then. would a body shop sell paint in fairly small amounts?
for 200 bucks they'll just do the thing in whatever color you like. I'd go that route.
you can do it very easily with a thing called 'trim black' i forgot what brand it is but i have some, i painted mine about a year ago and it is still in great condition.. i'll try to get a pic.. (i also did my hood scoop with it..)
cool that might be the way to go then, from looking at your picture it looks like it turned out well
alright i did a bit of research and the trim paint seems to be a good way to do it, especially since its such a small piece. plus the trim paint is intended for exterior surfaces so it'll stand up to the elements...thoughts?
This of course is only my opinion, but I would follow rednecks idea. I guess overall, it would depend on how good the rest of the body looks, but another thing to consider- If it doesn't spend alot of time in a garage, I have yet to see a paint job from a spray can that will endure even an Ohio Summer...MS is a little hotter.:flamed:
