clay bar????

so my moms car and my mustang have some shit on them that wont come off. like some stains that are in the paint. so i am under the impression that a clay bar is the way to go.

also im afraid to wax my car b/c i know that if i cant get it the whole way clean then ill end up damaging it futher. so i have never waxed so some one told me that a clay would get everything off and then i could wax.

so first is is wash, clay, wash wax. or what.

any aditional info would be great too.

thanks guys.

p.s.
the guy at the store told me that the ice liquid clay bar was better but i thought that i herd elseware that is wasnt. what do u think.

and also around hear i can only find the ice liquid clay and the mothers kit. id rather use miquires but i cant find any clay products from them hear.

Meguires has a clay kit. I use the mothers clay kit, its decent, i'm sure theres 1000x better ones out there.

I'm pretty sure 03gtmustang will chime in, but I'd wash the car, clay bar it using a detailing spray, polish, cleaner wax, then a wax/sealant.

Long process.

I use the Mother's clay bar, too. I usually wash the car, clay it using spray detailer as a lubricant, wash it again, Meguiar's Deep Crystal paint cleaner, Meguiar's Deep Crystal Polish, and Meguiar's Carnauba Wax. Looks like glass and feels like silk afterwards. Usually takes me about 4-6 hours, but it's worth it in the end.

If you have to go over the counter mothers kit is your best bet. Turtle wax liquid clay bar does nothing at all.

If you want something better I love the poorboys clay bar kit you get it here:

Like said you want to wash, clay, wash, polish, then wax or use a sealant or both. You dont need to use a QD to use the clay either. I use the soapy water for my next wash when I do it. I just wash her. Then clean the water out add more and soap then toss the onto whatever panel Im doing and clay it then wash it then rinse and do the whole car like that. Save your money you spent on the QD for when your done with the car or after regular washes.

I dont recommend claying without polishing after. That being the case, a simple solution would be to use a chemical cleaner instead. Go get some 3M adhesive cleaner. Or you can go to CVS and pick up some rubbing alcohol.

i have some time off comeing my way for labor day so i was going to make a day of it. from what ive read of clay bars it seems like its just what i need. and im hearing to do a polish after the clay too so im looking at wash, clay, wash, polish, wash, paste wax, idk if wash goes hear too, and paint sealer. dam that is a lot. but im into it and the car is long over due.

so im gona use mig gold class wash, id like to find a mig clay kit on line someware, im not sure about a polish and i was thinking about gold class paste wax, and i have never seen a sealent at any of my auto parts stores.

Not to hijack but, If i wash the car, should i just skip the drying process, and maybe get a spray bottle of soapy water and clay the car, then wash it again, then dry it? Then polish, then wax?

tristang 08-20-2008 03:54 PM

actually i was gona ask that same question. do i have to dry totaly between processes. cause that would make the time like dubble.

01FR500 08-20-2008 04:11 PM

When I clay, I dry the car first. I doubt it would make much difference, but I didn't know I should wash or use a polish after claying. I always clay'd and then go straight to wax. I need to invest in some good products and learn how to use them.

liquid clay bar imho is a piece of shit. use a real clay bar. ill never buy that ice thing again. waste of dam money, i was so pissed it didnt take off the grime i had purchased it for and that is said it would

tristang 08-20-2008 05:43 PM

yeah that is what i thought i had read befor. and the clerk guy was like swareing by it and i was like um ill just take the mothers.

Dream 08-20-2008 05:52 PM

take fuckin turtle wax before u get the one that has "ICE" printed right across the front of it. it didnt even make my car shine. i used it....let it sit for a whole day......thought fuck it........and went to the gas station, grabed a super wash, (the one with the wax) and it made my car shine like twice as much and it looked like a better job.....i have used a real clay bar before and was thrilled with the job...this time i had been drastically disappointed.

tristang 08-20-2008 06:28 PM

what kind of polish and wax are u guys useing.

tristang 08-20-2008 06:51 PM

and do i do clay cleaner wax then polish and then a paste wax or is it just clay polis and paste wax???

i think that that will be one of the last questions i have.

spike_africa 08-20-2008 08:19 PM

you wash, clay, wash again, polish, wax/sealant. You dont have to dry it to clay it. Like i said I wash my car empty and refill the soap bucket and clay and wash the car one panel at a time till I've done the whole car. You use the soapy water as the lubricant as you clay the paint. It does take time to do, but its called detailing, not quick washing. You looking at a min of 4 hours if you know what your doing. Being more realistic is 5-6 hours to do a good job.

I'm a poorboys fan so I will say poorboys polish with carnuba is my personal choice as of now, I fallow it up with Poorboys EX-P sealant which works nicely on light cars like mine.

Steeda97 08-20-2008 08:31 PM

I never got around to ordering any really good product, so the autozone crap i have will do.

Meguiars Gold Class Wash
Mothers Clay Bar
Meguires Polish
Meguires Gold Class Wax.

Detailing on a budget. suckas!

spike_africa 08-21-2008 07:45 AM

It will still look better then 80% of the cars around you because they only wash and maybe sometimes throw a coat of wax on. The products on the net aren't that much more money and are far better you should really start to gather some products up.

Steeda97 08-21-2008 08:39 AM

Yeah i probably will start.

jon2325 08-21-2008 06:54 PM

so i got that mothers kit the other day but its been raining all week so i haven't got to use it.. but my question is if i wash, clay, rewash then will i only have to use that carnabu wax that came with it or other stuff too?

Flynnster 08-21-2008 06:59 PM

i used the wax that came in the kit and it worked very well.

You can do that. There is no correct way to go about it, however use hardcore detailers are gonna tell you to use a polish at the least then wax. But you can just wax it afterwards. Until were talking paint correction, then you cant really fuck anything up and your ok to go. Unless you do something really stupid.
