replacing OEM deck but new radio has power but NO AUDIO (w/pics)
 

hey everyone,

my setup: 2k mustang with OEM radio/tape deck and a single OEM CD player

right underneath it:

I purchased the new deck at bestbuy along with an amplifier eliminator harness since I wanted to do this on my own. All the wires were crimped

except for 4 of them:
white/blue = amp turn on
white/orange = dimmer
white/black = amp ground
orange = illumination

The problem I am having is that my OEM deck has 3 connections, one for
power, one for the speakers and an extra 6 prong plug which the CD player
also has. The wiring harness does not have a connection for this one.

So I get power on the new deck but no audio. I troubleshooted by connecting my OEM deck without that 6 prong plug and I got no audio, I was only able to get very FAINT sound from the OEM when I cranked the volume to the max. (there is NO audio from the new one, even cranked up). I dont know if the guy at best buy gave the wrong harness, but I did tell him my setup and he even told me to not worry about the extra plug, that I dont need it....funny, it seems to need it!!!

update...apparently there's an amplifier installed!!??
 

ok so after endless googlin' and forum readings it seems like my problem lies with the built in amplifier. I took out the CD player and underneath there's a flat metal square like box seen on the bottom here:

Wrote down the part number and googled it, YR3F-18T806-AA = my results are 3 polish websites, but if you drop the AA you will get a few more results displaying mustang amplifiers.

So now how do I go about bypassing that amp and using the one built in with the new deck? I am assuming the deck has a built in amp, this is what I purchased (I know it's not fancy so dont flame it! :) ) : http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1168043811573

when your installing the radio yourself, you have to disconnect the battery. When i did my first radio swap in my first car i found that out the hard way. If you wire power to the deck and a pair of the speaker wires ground out on some metal in the casing, then it will blow it and there will be no sound; you will have illumination and dimmer but no sound. Did you do srape the wires up against something grounded or up against another pair of wires?

No the cables have not been scraped against anything, the speakers work because when I plug in the OEM they work fine.

I think the guy at best buy just sold me the wrong wiring harness! argh!

might be the harness. But see if you can swap out that unit that isnt working with a new one(hope you have the receipt). I dont have ALOT of audio knowledge, but that was an experience i had to learn the hard way and id have to say thats what it is sounding like. But try swapping out the radio first before you buy a new harness unless you can take the other one back and get your refund for it. Good luck, keep me posted!

it was actually the harness....I took the car today and the guy checked out the crimping, he said it looked fine....he did say ithat it was probably the harness. we reiwired another and the deck is working and sounds sweet...it's amazing how crappy an OEM radio can be on a mustang!!!
