Hey folks. So yeah, some of you already read about my "Bumper drama".

Well, my roomie got me a new bumper off craigslist. I first saw it and figured this will never work. It looked terrible. Abourt 6/10 condition.
Well, after alot of elbow grease and hardwork, i have most of the scratches buffed out, the paint is lookin good, and the bumper is at about 8/10 condition.
I would settle for 9/10, however, on the passenger side of the bumper near the wheel there is a pretty ugly network of scratches. So far i havent been able to buff these out, they look rather deep.

Now, i dont want to deal with a new paintjob, i'd rather find a way to eliminate these from view though before i use the bumper.

So far i have washed it, cleaned it with mguires detailer, waxed it with black turtlewax, and i recently found my chipstick which im gonna try as well.

does anyone have any reccommedations on a way to hide these scratches short of painting the bumper? the rest of the bumper looks good, its fade matches my car's fade. it is just that one area of scratches.

any advice?

Did you hand buff or use a buff machine? Id go at it with a buffer and if you cant get it off, break out the water and sanding paper and do a light wet sand (read up first), and start your detailing process all over starting with swirl and scratch remover, thick polish mabye a couple coats, caranuba wax, and then top with a synthetic. You can try topping it with a paint sealer to help hold everything in but I cant guarentee they will always be gone. It might be a problem spot you might have to keep covering up.

you need to post up some pics so we can see how bad they are as that will determine what process to use.

The rule of thumb is if you can hang your nail on it, its probably a pretty bad scratch and most of it wont come out. Pretty easy logic, eh?

if worse comes to worse...

try getting a VERY VERY fine grit sand paper and dusting some of the top paint off and polishing the hell out of it...

your car is black... it would be very easy to buy the black paint you need and sand the area and repaint yourself...

you'd need a spray gun (80 bucks at home depot great investment)
as well as a decent air compressor (rather expensive but if ya have a buddy w/ one.. then thats what friends are for!

Try Maguires Scratch X. But, if it is too deep, it needs paint. Best bet is to wet sand with some 1000 or 1500 grit and then re clear coat the area or the entire bumper. It would look like new.

For that cost, he can have it painted, old one removed, and new one installed.

Well, i do have a pretty bitching airbrush/compressor combo, same airbrush that that levine guy uses when doing true fire on cars and cycles. Revolution HCA airbrush. Maybe i could just buy some auto paint if worse comes to worse.

Ill get some pics of the area, ill try to get some that really show the scratches and post them up.

im gonna give it another whack tonight. Pick up some modelo especial, have some beers and work on it.

yah so far i have just hand buffed it. im pretty good at that kind of stuff but this just looked a bit more than anything ive had to fix in the past.

heh... get some touchup paint, throw it in the airbrush and just do a light coat. that'll be an easy way to destroy an airbrush. <g>
