nitrous people in here
what do you have as far as computer modification goes? i have an xcal2 but im thinking for some reason that i would need to purchase a chip and flip switch.
so other than the precautionary mods (window switch, etc) what else would i need? colder plugs, svt focus fuel pump? |
Well if you run a wet kit then fuel pump should be fine but it wouldnt hurt to upgrade if you have the extra cash. Colder plugs yes a must a window switch is optional i would say. I ran my zex kit without one and it only had a WOT switch and worked fine. I had a diablo sport but always run your stock tune when running nitrous unless you have a specific tune made for it the programmers usually increase timing and mess with fuel settings so just run ur stock tune.
|
How big of a shot are you going to run and is it a wet kit or dry?
|
if you're running a performance tune you'll want to back off the timing and I'd really have it tuned by a pro with the nitrous on a dyno. I'd go with a flip chip or a 2nd tune on the handheld. The flip chips are easier to deal with in your case.
I like window switches. |
You don't have to have a chip, and a flash tuner is just fine, its what I use. You can even spray on a stock tune, thats how weak the timing is stock in these cars. But if you are running a tune, then you will want to either return it to the stock tune to spray, or have a nitrous tune sent to you or get a dyno tune which is better and you will make more power.
You must run 91-93 octane when you spray no exceptions. Run one step colder copper plugs like NGK TR6's part # 4177. If your a manual tranny car then a window switch is nice so you don't have to think about it. However you don't have to have one to use the kit. Just don't spray below 3k rpms and you will be fine. And of course no powershifting on the bottle. Fuel wise under 100shot no worries the stock pump will handle it. However if the car is getting old or has a lot of miles for the cheap price of a pump upgrade I would upgrade the fuel pump. At the least you need to toss in a new fuel filter on the car when you install the kit. Heaters, purge, gauges are all extra and are nice but not needed. However the two best things to have are a heater and bottle PSI gauge hands down. |

I always run 93 in my car, and I change my fuel filter usually every oil change. I spray a 125 on the stock pump. Seems to be fine. If anything I swear it feels like my car runs better N/A after I sprayed it. ha. I have a purge kit and the shot seems to hit much harder after purging. Maybe its in my head. But you most definitely need a bottle heater and gauge. |
If it hits harder after you purge your car is messed up.
j/k lol, that's what its supposed to do. It gets the air out of the lines so its full of nitrous. That way when you spray it hits harder and is more consistent at the track. Its a fun extra, but not needed by any means. And the stock fuel pump I would spray 125hit too, only thing is once you get a lot of miles or the pump starts to get out. I would much rather have a new one in there. |
Eh my cars got like 70k on it. I don't drive it really. I've only sprayed it 4 times as well. :P

it's only there when you feel like it |
That's pretty accurate. Me being to lazy to get the bottle
filled is probably another reason. |

If you're doing it right you keep your foot on the go-pedal to the floor, with nitrous that would overwind your motor, hit the rev-limiter, lean the mix and blow the motor. That's what the WOT switch is for.

a lot of good info in this thread. a local shop by me does nitrous and won't do an installation without things like a window switch and a WOT switch. also would prefer to install a bottle opener, but i'm like
"nah, i'll only use the bottle at the track, so i'll just pop open the trunk and do it there." |
The WOT switch will ensure that the motor gets blown if you power shift with it. The key to life there IMHO is a window switch.

Spike or r3d...
what would you recommend to get? i want to do this right the first time around to safely spray a 100 shot, or maybe a 125? |
What do you mean tune wise or extra stuff?
|
extra stuff. tune wise im gonna be getting Jon Lund to dyno tune my car (he is one of the best tuners here in PA).
|
spike laid that out already, and he was right.
