NOS, turbo, or s/c

I am running a pretty much stock 00 3.8l v6. What I am wondering is, what is the best way to go for power gain? I know NOS is defenatly the less expensive option to go, but I dont know if my car will handle it, and I wouldnt be to happy if I blew my engine.

What would you get for some power gain?

(I want to stick with a v6, so no "get a v8" posts please :p)

For the money you'd drop for a s/c or a turbo, put a stroker kit in it. For a little more port the heads/intakes and get a cam setup for NA.. 280 or so RWHP more then what a 75 shot would give you.

And I'm not going to say nitrous won't blow your motor, because it might.

grilldan 05-19-2009 03:18 PM

Is there really a stroker kit for a 3.8?

SnTBakosFinest 05-19-2009 03:30 PM

Yes. http://www.supersixmotorsports.com/ might wanna start doing some extensive research about your motor ect before you plan on doing any major modifications to your car.

those are just two of the more popular. You can build thewm yourself as well (or have them built). Supersix, though, offers powerpacks. They are worth taking a look at if nothing else.

was going to say that.

grill dan, there is sooooo much more that needs to be done to a car before you should do power adders. remember, you can't build a house without a foundation. suspension, brakes, drivetrain are all the foundation of your car. IMO they need to be solid before you do something like nitrous or a blower.

not saying that some ppl haven't added a power pack without improving on those things.

grilldan 05-19-2009 05:25 PM

This for sure wouldn't happen until after I upgrade the suspension, and drivetrain. I just ordered new rotors and pads. Then I am getting new wheels and tires, then shocks/struts and springs. After that, probably a 4.1 (I think, I need to do more resaearch on that).

Then I will want to add some more power. I am just checking things out in advance :)

I am leaning twords getting the stage 2+ powerpak from supersixmotorsports.com. Just because it is half the price of a s/c or a turbo.

I got a lot of time to think about it though :p

Thanks for all your answers guys! This is a great community :)

stainless steel brake lines are good too. improve brake pedal response

I was looking at the J&M ones from American Muscle. Guess those just got added to my list :)

Thank you.

If it was me and I love nitrous, I would get a used Procharger setup and do work on people. With full exhaust and a procharger with 11psi and the 3 core optional intercooler you can push over 300rwhp.

And for the money spent you can push that, or very close to it NA and have much more room to work if you ever decided to fork out the cash for a turbo/nitrous/sc

grilldan 05-20-2009 07:12 PM

So your suggestion is to get a used procharger, and then from there maybe upgrade to a turbo/nitrus/sc?

If you find a used setup there is no way in hell you are going to have a heads/cam stroker for that money ever.

The ATI Procharger is a supercharger. Procharger is the name of the company that sells the supercharger kit. Its a very nice kit and I have installed them myself before and they really make the 3.8 haul ass. Put it this way to you. My freind has a 94 v6 mustang with a 00 3.8 motor with long tube headers,H-pipe, and dumped magnaflows, and an 11psi procharger kit. Made 309rwhp. It walked my full bolt on 02 mustang GT every time.

Dustin's suggesting something other than nitrous?

That's more than enough reason to go with what he said.

1. Have fun finding one right now.
2. Have fun with the install price, as it won't change, unless hes got a buddy who will do it for a couple cases of beer.
Not to mention - Pump - Injectors - Tune - and possibly MAF

So you figure for the procharger lets throw out 1500 without having to send it back and have the procharger reworked.

Install price is well lets see, my shops price is 80 dollars/hr so lets throw out.. 8 hours theres 640. Tune - depends on where you live and whos doing it. TBH I like Justin and have had my intial tunes done at VMP, but I'd much rather sit on a dyno before driving that car hard. Pump - Couple hundred bucks - Injectors - Think you would be wanting to run 30lbs? So theres some more cash to throw out

theres a couple grand, already not counting pump, tune and injectors. Theres the price of a stroker, now, don't get me wrong, install price would still account for another chunk of change, however, you STILL have a much more solid base to BUILD ON. After you spool that procharger up at 11psi thats as far as you can/should go with that stock motor. Otherwise, have fun eatingshit, and still dishing out a buttload of cash to have the motor redone.

To me, if ya got the money to drop 5 grand on the v6, you got the money to build it even stronger and run it harder. Otherwise - trade it in for an 8 because it isn't going to take much more to walk all over you in a GT.

I've searched for prochagers, and haven't found one yet. I've also weighed my options with a turbo, but, for what I wanted, the stock block was just too risky, not to mention a smog issue here.

Dude, a procharger IS a supercharger. .. like i said, RESEARCH, it'll get you far. Research before you even consider a power ADDER. And find out what you want to do with the car. Do you want 11s or do you want 13s..ect..

spike_africa 05-21-2009 05:24 AM

We found a procharger used for $1900, then got used 38# injectors($100),a new pump($135), and 90mm Lmaf($95), and the other big cost was justins dyno tune at $599.And we installed it ourselves, as the install is not very bad at all, but if someone is not able to do this then they will have to add in that expense. So I mean its really not that bad if you hunt and find deals out there. Hell if you bought the Procharger new its still going to cost less then a stroker and heads/cam motor. Granted you will be able to make way more power with the stroker once you add some sort of power adder, you can do the Procharger cheaper and make more power then the n/a stroker will.

I see your point about the stroker, but its going to cost more then a Procharger setup for sure. You gotta get the parts, machine shop costs, fluids, supporting mods, tune, etc... its gonna cost a good amount. But it would make for a sweet v6! and I am all for that.

LOL I know right?

Its just that with the v6 it does not have a crap ton of power stock unlike us v8 cars which can be pretty quick with bolt on's. Though if I had a full bolt on v6 car with a 100shot that would be the ticket for me too :D

White04GT 05-21-2009 10:05 AM

Oh you can find good deals on procharger's out there just have to be patient and look. I sold my p1sc on svtp for 2000 with 2 pulleys, 2 power pipes, 2 bottles of oil, mafia extender, 3 core intercooler, and a belt. The head unit had maybe 1000 miles on it at the most. That person got a hell of a deal. Just search around on all the forums and you will find a deal out there. Personally I would go with a procharger over nitrous. You always have that power there, and you don't have to deal with getting the bottle refilled. Procharger's are very fun on the highway and you can make more than enough power on the stock block. The only thing I hated about my procharger is about every 6 months I would have to get a new tensioner pulley.

Thank you guys, your adive rocks!

I know I need to do "Research" thats kind of the reason I joined the forum lol. Its a lot easier to get direct answers than looking through tons of pages hopeing to find the right one.
