Intercooler Options
I am getting my Vortech SQ Trim Mongoose Kit installed March 10, and am starting to save up for an intercooler. I don't want to fab one up myself. I was looking at buying the Paxton A/A off of MPH, but $1500 for a intercooler is kind of rediculous. Are there any other intercoolers you guys are running that will support my SQ trim? I dont know if this matters, but keep in mind i have a 1997 GT. Pics would be awesome too! Thanks guys!

Theres a guy selling the piping alone for sn95s on corral.net, and you can buy intercoolers galore on ebay. buy some riceboy intercooler, they are everywhere.

Buy a DIY kit from MPH and a piping kit from ebay.

I think I am just going to wait and save for the vortech air/water powercooler. I was thinking about an air-air, but I dont want some homemade kit on my car if I can help it. The Paxton is nice, but its so big and seems like a high price for what your getting. For the same price i can get the powercooler and its been proven good to 600+whp. I was thinking it would look cooler if I had a big intercooler under the bumper and everything, but with the air/water I can just buy a big shiny Cobra heat exchanger (like fluidyne) and mount it right there. Then it would hold lots more fluid and i can put ice in the tank at the track. probably what ill be doing

Get the cooler now so you only have to tune the car once.

you know you want this in your bumper.
Attachment 25271 even after you put the bigger heat exchanger in it will be home made. |
If you use the Vortech air-water, DEFINITELY use a big '03 Cobra-style heat exchanger. If you're still considering an air-air, you may want to see if Fast Track still offers theirs, it's a good setup.

you have Fast Track, BTI, Paxton for prefabbed units. I was a dealer for BTI, but their rising prices have hindered sales. I toyed with going to a Powercooler as well, with a large heat exchanger, but it's a PITA to mount a mini-race to it. I ended up going with a Snow progressive controller meth kit.
FYI, those eBay horizontal flow intercoolers are restrictive as hell. What you need is a verticle flow. Intercooler core tube length effects flow, so the shorter verticle flow ones are a lot better. That's why you see Paxton and Procharger use verticle flow. Some good reading: http://www.bellintercoolers.com/pages/techFAQ.html |
