Nitrous VS Blowers
 

So, you want more HP, right? Who doesn't? And you are considering all the major options. I thought I would start a tech thread comparing nitrous to blowers. I have done this by simply listing the advantages of nitrous and the advantages of blowers:

NITROUS:
1 - Low startup costs.
2 - Can use low octane fuel when not spraying which helps off-set the cost of getting bottles filled.
3 - Effective way to add HP quickly.
4 - Only use the nitrous when you need it. Therefore, you can shut it down when a guest, child, or wife is driving.
5 - Only puts strain on motor when using it.
6 - Easy to install and easy to remove and re-sell when getting rid of the car. No one has to ever know it was there.
7 - Can easily change the amount of added power that you want by changing nozzle size etc..

BLOWERS:
1 - No need to fill a bottle.
2 - Always on-tap and ready to go.

i really want to go blower.... no nitrous. the air where i live isnt great for nitrous. air fuel ratio is a little on the lean side for my likes on my daily driver out here. i would have to go with a wet shot and i might as well save a couple extra bucks and go with a boost unit... that is just me. i am kinda bias though... i was brought up with the idea of nitrous is for hondas or sub 9 second dragsters. and plus guys nothing sounds better than that little whistle sound when it isnt completly warm yet and the thing winding out going down the track!!!! :) :D :eek: :p

Funny actually. I grew up with big azz V-8's sucking laughing gas. Nitrous was used on old American Steel before anyone knew what rice was.

Nitrous is IDEAL for a daily driver who likes to hit the strip on ocassion. That is, if you believe that the juice is just for racing. ;) That one on eof my main reasons for going with it.

Keep in mind, nitrous and blowers do essentially the same thing. They both force oxygen into the motor so you can add more fuel. Nitrous is actually better in that it also drops the intake temperature a bunch thus preventing detonation unlike a blower where the temp increases (when comparing the same amount of oxygen contribution). If your air is bad for nitrous, it is just as bad for a blower. I really never understood that comment.

With any forced induction, you must manage your a/f PERIOD. Ever seen what happens to a turbo appliocation that is too lean? The motor gets destroyed. The nice thing about a blower is that they are consistent, so it is easier to tune the application and get the a/f setup. With nitrous, the amount you add is depending on variables such as bottle pressure and size of the injector nozzle. As a result, the a/f can be all over the place...like hitting a moving target. However, modern technology has found a home with newer nitrous applications to prevent/minimize these challenges. The goal being to manage the a/f consistantly and not-over use the product.

The way I see it, nitrous is alot cheaper to start out with! I got my edelbrock nitrous kit for $525 ;) .including bottle heater, purge kit, fuel pump voltage booster, tachdriver, RPM activated window switch and all the necessary hardware! Needless to say it was a steal! I paid $300 bucks for a professional installation and it has worked out great! To buy a charger and get it professionally installed and tuned, will at least run you a good 3 or 4 G's! :eek: ..and 2v's are known to not be able to handle boost very well! Unless you have forged internals, I wouldn't feel safe with a stock boosted 2v, but thats just me! Not to say that nitrous won't blow your motor up! Get greedy on the shot and you will kiss your motor goodbye! I do however plan on getting a prochager and a SHM shortblock in the near future! ;)

Miguel great post! Have you run a lot of bottles? What shot do you use most of the time?

just to say i run the bottle also, and in my future a blower is in the works.In my oppinion a stock 2v can handle boost as long as you dont get greedy with it, i have had some buddy's running 10 pounds on stock bottom ends since 99 and it hasent given them 1 problem, buying tires on the other hand has been a pain he goes through like 4 sets a year!

I run about 1-2 bottles a month! I have an 80 shot! :D

to busy paying insurance premiums. Blowers to expensive. Juice works great. Scares the crap out of passengers.
