How strong is the stock rear end??

After having the blower installed(mods in my sig), do think that the rear end will be safe? I run 315-35-17 bfg drags. I will be going to the track to test out this new set up, but I dont wanna come home in the back of a tow truck... I do plan on getting the 31 spline rear but cant get it done for a few months, Thanks for you help!

i know of some people that have got by on 28 spline, but it dosent last long if you get crazy on the launch. i would just take it easy out of the hole till you get your rear done.

its a toss up just go run it. It might break it might not. I have tons and tons of passes on a stock rear end on dr's with nitrous.

csledd 04-16-2006 09:48 AM

I've seen people making less power than me break the stock rear end.. only because they launched the crap out of it all the time. Like he said, take it easy for now :)

you are alot braver than i am. i did a 3200rpm drop 1 time with nitto dr and only a diablo tune. scared the crap out of me lol

csledd 04-16-2006 10:25 AM

I usually do a 3500rpm drop on Nittos.. not sure how that'll do since my powerband is different

you gotta go big or go home. The luanch wont really hurt the axles its when you get wheel hoop that they break, they can take some hard hits but that hop just breaks them right away. mine luanches hard and even no hope thanks to my lakewood lowers it been smooth sailing. But i have cash in reserve for a built rear should the time come.

RedFirevert04GT 04-16-2006 02:48 PM

At some point or another with hard launches with that kind of power, the rear end is going to give up the ghost. It might be sooner, it might be later. Rest assured it's going to happen. I would go ahead and start saving up for upgrading the halfshafts and pumpkin.

Wow, I have never thought of this but it makes perfect sense.

you will probably be fine, drag radials are not that hard on the rear end. I'd be more worried about hard launches with slicks

Same here! i had my stock one for 4yrs with BFG drags before upgrading never broke! my hardest launch was probably 4-4500rpm no side stepping crap, just popping the clutch!

Well, I am going next week...I will launch it hard and we will see what happens. I hope it holds out... I havent had any problems on the street but then again street and strip are 2 different worlds, thats why I asked.

matrixpuba 04-18-2006 09:14 AM

better bring a trailer lol

Man I dont know but I think I get way better traction on the street than the strip. But then I dont have good tires yet. 275's are in june when I get auto inspection.

2000novigt 05-25-2006 06:28 PM

Well after some deley, I finally got 3 runs at the strip the 1st run was a 12.3 @116 and the second was a 12.1 @115 and the final run was a 11.9 @115. My 60's were all 1.9's...All runs were on BFG 315-35-17 drag radials. I think I can still get better times and the best part I drove it home without breaking anything!!!!!! But still wana upgrade the rear.

WaterDR 05-25-2006 10:03 PM

Great times! I have nearly the same setup, but no times yet.

When it comes to the rear holding up, I really think the correct way to think of it is not what kind of tires you have or how much power you are making, BUT rather what 60 foot times you have.

Think about it. 60 foot times are a function of traction and force. The lower your 60 foot, the more stress being applied to the rear. At 1.9 seconds, you are not much different the then a stock set up. Heck, I ran 2.0's when my car was n/a with 4.10's on street tires. So a car running 1.9's is not putting that much more stress on the rear then a car running 2.0's. Your best friend is tire slip when it comes to saving the rear.

DR's IMO are not much better then a good set of street tires. Slicks change everything.

nice times.

I worry more about the stock trans and/or clutch than the rear. The 8.8 is pretty strong for a factory FORD unit. The trans suck with added power to them.

housing strong
28 spline axle and carrier, not so strong

spike_africa 05-26-2006 03:43 PM

Most of these guys who break axles have been in the sub 1.8 range. I think that is the breaking point. anything faster then 1.8 and it cant hold the power (the carrier or axles that is).

2000novigt 05-27-2006 12:42 PM

I ran 2.0's before the blower too. I was kinda dissapointed in the 1.9 60's...but my MPH is good enough for mid 11's (so I hear). I guess I will need to get more suspension mods. Also I think that because my car is now an auto it is not so rough on the rear anyways....
