its pretty cool how sophisticated the IRS looks compared to the stick

Stephen4036 12-19-2008 06:34 PM

damn

Mr. Zip 12-19-2008 07:36 PM

dang no wonder termies get that.

zigzagg321 12-19-2008 08:06 PM

thats why I like my stick

jon2325 12-20-2008 10:20 AM

how much heavier is the IRS?

PureStang 12-20-2008 11:01 AM

85-100 i have heard both.

r3dn3ck 12-20-2008 02:32 PM

the IRS weighs 380lbs with all the crud you need to put it on. Your net weight gain is about a hundred pounds but you lose nearly 100lbs of unsprung weight (that is, 100lbs of weight moves to being supported by the suspension rather than being part of it.

The IRS that ford stuck cobra owners with is shameful in almost every respect. A pure good independant rear like the vette or supra is a whole nuther ball game but I'd never have one of the mega fragile shitbox Ford IRS's again.

Stephen4036 12-20-2008 02:33 PM

por que?! lol

I'm pretty sure R3D just said they were shit hence why he would never go with it again.

You go from about 3 things that can go wrong to about 300

95snake 12-22-2008 09:17 AM

wow that is a huge difference!

ding ding ding... that's the meat of the matter right there. I broke no less than 20 different parts in my IRS units over half a dozen different breakage events.

spike_africa 12-22-2008 10:12 AM

I would rather have a solid any day.

Lazerred6 12-22-2008 10:26 AM

Does anyone know anything about the IRS that GM is putting in the camaro.

I'm just wondering if it will be a glass-jawed as the ford IRS

dont forget us 99/01 owners too. lol

As fragile as they are, i do like mine alot, considering I don't spend lots of time in an auto racing(just the occasional autox and drag strip), I do enjoy the nicer ride of it and it feels much more stable then the solid axle when cornering hard.

r3dn3ck 12-22-2008 11:38 AM

man's got a point. They are a very good riding setup. Just not for whippin' and floggin'.

I've seen the new GM IRS. It's pretty badass. I think it has a LOT of potential from the brief look I had at it (saw some close up of the IRS unit on TV last night). It's built as an assembly and very tightly packaged. Dale Jr. said it had a good bit of body roll but the rear was smooth and predictable even at the limit. Looked like it could use a stiffer spring though.
