I don't care for them, but my old boss's wife had a GT and I drove it once. It was a fun and fast little car, till it burned. I guess fire is the main killer of them.

Misinformation can seem like fact after awhile when it gets continually passed along like this for others to hear or read. I would assume that you are just regurgitating what some other unknowledgeable person said at some point?
If not then I am curious to know what information your basing this fire comment on?
Actually, based on production figures from 1984 to 1988 and semi current registration figures there are as many or more Fieros still running and on the road today as any other production car from the same time period. I guess that means that they didn't all burn up, blow up or get sucked up by aliens LOL

I'm not saying that the Fiero didn't catch on fire, all I am saying is that making statements like "the Fiero had an engine fire and fires are the main killers of them" is helping to spread misinformation if it's not true. Just because your buddy, or your friends uncles second cousin said so doesn't make it true and fact.
If someone came along on a Fiero message board and said that they saw a crappy old Mustang with an engine fire which totaled the car and their buddy said that they heard all Mustangs have engine fire problems and so fires are the main killers of Mustangs, I am sure someone on the message board who knew more about them and maybe even owned a Mustang or two would certainly speak up and correct the misinformation.

Car fires are nothing new to the auto industry, and GM and every other auto manufacturer have had issues with them since about day one. The Fiero had a few early on as does any car at some point (no car ever made has never had a few cases of engine fires) and with any car it is always a possibility. Ford has certainly had their problems with engine fires. For example:

http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news/...often_late.htm

Ford Motor Co., for example, denied for five years that its vehicles were prone to steering-column fires before finally launching the largest auto safety recall in history in 1996.

By then, a number of motorists had died and many others had been injured in fires which allegedly resulted from faulty ignition switches in the steering columns of their Fords.

Ford quietly conducted a limited recall, replacing the faulty switches in some 27,000 fleet vehicles while publicly denying that there was a problem. Public pressure mounted as lawsuits were filed.

Ford eventually paid a $425,000 settlement to NHTSA for allegedly concealing information about the ignition-switch problems. But critics said it saved much more than that by reducing the number of vehicles it had to recall and repair. Even so, it wound up recalling eight million cars, trucks and vans.
This next one some of you stang lovers might not want to read:

Flaming Fords

Amy of Antioch TN (1/28/05):

My 2000 Mustang (42k miles) was parked in the lot at work when I received an email from the front desk that there was smoke coming from the passenger side hood. I went down and there was a small flame that, even with two fire extinguishers, was incessant. Fire department came and car was taken to nearest Ford Dealership. Ford took no responsibility and even made me foot the bill for my rental when it took them over a month to produce one of the wiring harnesses. I have called them and consequently wrote a letter to state I would never buy one of their vehicles again. I traded my Mustang two days after getting it back from the dealership.

Fire burned through two wiring harnesses, relay (source of the fire) had to be replaced also.

Jakub of Evanston IL (12/15/04):
I purchased a 2004 Ford Mustang Mach 1 in November 2003. In July 2004 I took the car into the Ford dealership (Highland Park Ford) with an idling problem. The car would idle to past redline and continue to do so no matter what I did, whether I was in gear, in neutral or with the clutch pedal depressed. As a result of this, the car would accelerate on its own while I was driving, etc.

>On Dec 14, 2004. I was driving on the highway when I noticed some smoke coming from the engine. I pulled over and opened to hood to see what was going on. I saw smoke coming from the rear of the engine. I closed the hood and called the police/fire department. The car is totalled as the front half is close to being gone, as is the front of the interior. I called the Ford dealership I purchased the car from to inform them of this, and they bluntly said that things like this are not covered and it does not concern them.

Tamara of Detroit:
My 1988 Ford Mustang that caught fire after 7 months of ownership. I contacted Ford back then (in 1992) and they would not acknowledge responsibility. Approximately one month after the fire, Ford issued a recall for "faulty ignition switches" that were responsible for fires in many Ford vehicles of that make and year. I am extremely displeased with Ford vehicles and I will NEVER purchase one again nor recommend one. I am currently a first year medical student and upon graduation my intentions are to purchase a new vehicle. You can be assured that Ford Motor Company will not even be a consideration.

We usually only keep insurance on the 4 cars we drive most of the time. If we want to take one of the other cars that is not covered at that moment, all we have to do is call or e-mail the insurance company and let them know which one we want to switch to and from the date and time of the call/e-mail that vehicle is now covered.

I think we should take all this negative attention off of the fiero and put it on a car more deserving.... The Yugo.
LOL...
I remember when I was a kid my neighbor bought one brand new or very close to brand new and it ran for a short time and sat in his driveway for years dead! I think I remember some art students making sculptures out of them a while back. I believe they said you could cut the bodies with scissors. hehe...

Just a few comments:

1 - When I was in HS, I wanted a Fiero.

2 - 20 years later, I am not sure if I am more shocked that there are 24 left, or that one person has 24 of them.

3 - This is a Mustang board....your have 24 Fieros. Don't be shocked if a few of us think that is strange. You probably own more then anyone in the entire world.

4 - I could stick a rocket up my *** and jump on a scooter and beat a Corvette, but I still would not be better then a Corvette. Just because something can be made faster, does not make it better unless you are racing for pinks.

5 - Everyone has got to have a hobby.....might as well be collecting Fieros.

I got both.

I'm shocked that on a car forum no less someone has the narrow mindedness to think that having a lot of cars is strange.

Hardly. I guess for some it's easier to talk then to actually be intelligent.

My hobby is actually collecting Star Trek memorabilia. I sold a bunch of duplicates I had to buy my Mustang GT for cash. My wife and I purchased a 4 bedroom two bath house with a large backyard with palm tree's in Isabela Puerto Rico with cash from items I have sold on eBay and I will eventually sell it all off once my Star Trek collectibles book comes out and I will retire at 45 with over a 1/4 million in the bank and will live easily and comfortably off the interest alone in our new ocean front home

One of the largest Mustang clubs is in Puerto Rico. I will ship my cars down there and have already joined the Mustang club. The Mustang club has a cruise almost every Sunday in Puerto Rico somewhere on the island and when they have a small turnout it's down to "only" around 150 Mustangs LOL
I can't wait!!

Ok, not sure where your coming from with this. I never compared them to Mustangs not did I EVER say that Mustangs are bullshit. Please don't put words in my mouth. The only thing I said was that you can't slam them with some bogus comment about them all going up in smoke since Ford has had more cars with engine fires than anyone else including GM. A Fiero is not a **** car. I could go and on about how the Fiero is a state of the art design even today yadaa yadda but I'm not going to. If you actually want to be intelligent on the subject and know more then go do a little research. One thing is true, this is a Mustang forum, not a Fiero forum.
But I find this attitude on many car forums, the idea that if you don't own or drive a certain make and model then it must be a **** car because the one you drive is the bomb over all others. How intelligent an attitude is that? Yes, Camaros are great cars. So are Firebirds and many many other cars. I'm not saying that a Fiero is in class with any of these other cars. All I said is that if your going to make comments about something, at least make sure you know what the hell you are talking about. If you want to be brand loyal thats fine, but to slam all other cars you don't own or know much about isn't any better than the morons that say that Ford stands for fix or repair daily.
Yes, "fortunately" the Fiero is what it is, however the problem on this board obviously is that some of you actually don't know anything about them. So go get a clue please.

5000 recalls. need I say more? I had one... best thing that ever happened to it was a telephone pole my little sister introduced it to. Consider that I liked that car when I had it... all two weeks of it and I still wasn't sad to see it die.

You're just going to have trouble finding anyone that has anything positive to say about the bloody things. It's ok... get thicker skin.

Total production of the Pontiac Fiero over all 5 years was 370,168 (Corbin 1996)
Recalls amounts to 0.07% of Fieros produced.
Nice try.

I would like to know why Fieros put the e-brake on the drivers side right by the door. My friends brother had one he was kind of fixing up and i drove it. Damn that thing sucked, but I wondered why the e-brake was right by the door and you had to lift yourself over it. Dumbest design ever.

Why don't you get a clue then, and stop posting about fieros on a mustang board already? And for the record i haven't made a single comment about fieros.
