This afternoon Chrysler Group and its parts division Mopar unveiled its newest concept vehicle, the Dodge Challenger SS, and a revived a trio of crate engines to mark the 50th anniversary of the classic 392 Hemi at the Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association trade show in Las Vegas.
The Challenger SS, which stands for Super Stock, is the second concept version of the legendary muscle car -- first revealed at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit early this year. Chrysler Group plans to have 2008 production models ready in early 2008.
The 392 Hemi crate engines, which are powerplants customers can order through Mopar and install in their garage, out power even the biggest production Hemi in vehicles now. (The 6.1-liter Hemi creates 425-horsepower.) The carbureted 392 will crank out 540 horsepower and 490-feet-pounds of torque. The fuel-injected version will push 525-horses and 510-foot-pounds of torque.
"The 392 Hemi is a legend so rich in automotive tradition that hundreds, if not thousands, of books and accounts have been written about its historical significance," said Chris Cortez, senior vice president--Global Service & Parts, Chrysler Group in a press release.
The aftermarket trade show began today and runs through Friday.

With the right paint scheme, that thing would be badass.

I believe its the best looking retro concept on the market. The Thunderbird was pretty close, also.

TClark22 11-01-2006 05:32 AM

well...there goes the GT500...it will get owned by that thing

PColav6 11-01-2006 05:40 AM

Looks a lot better than the Camaro......Camaro looks like something from Robocop

SpinMedia 11-01-2006 06:22 AM

god forbid they bring back the el camino with 600 horses

BrentK 11-01-2006 06:24 AM

That looks badass..If the cut down the weight in the new challengers I'd buy one. I think mopar did a good job incorperating the style with the older ones and not like chevy did with the camaro

SS for chevy means Super Sport I think and for mopar means Super Stock. They made a Barracuda SS in 1968.

PistonsFan102 11-01-2006 01:07 PM

I just think that the Challenger looks to retro.

yellowstang99 11-01-2006 07:44 PM

I like it alot. I give them credit for actually trying to make it resemble the older challenger. The charger looks nothing like the old, not to mention its a 4 door. Chevy's impala and malibu are completely different. I think chevy should do a retro nova. Anyway, the challenger no doubt will be a beast. Let the sports car wars begin!

DarkSith 11-01-2006 08:19 PM

I think it's pretty bad ass, here a quick PS I did to change the color.
