Anyone intrested in 5.4L swaps, in here. Need you to opine.
Very cool, I just got my A-1000 pump in a couple days ago.
Hey guys. Im new but I've been kinda following this thread every now and then. And have a question.
Why do you need a 5 inch cowl hood for the 5.4 swap? During a conversation with ford racing and a few others, I was told that the 54 was about an 1 and 1/2 inch taller than the 46. You can negate that with a k-member spacer. Then I called whipple and they told me that the 2.9 is about an inch taller than the eaton supwrcharger that the 03-04 cobras have. It seems like a 2'5 inch cobra r hood should clear that with room to spare. So why the 5 inch cowl?
I've called shops and noone has done it. But during that conversation with the rep at ford racing, he said that the intake that's on the 00' cobra r is probably bigger than a whipple and sees no reason it wouldn't clear the R hood.
What gives? Any enlightenment would surely be appreciated

ALL of the mega cowl hood issues come from using a lightning oriented blower and mid plate. Many other blower systems do not require substantial cowls. 2.5-3" will do. It's all about the way that the blower mounts to the lower intake manifold. The lightning blower setup and direct replacements for it sit on top of an inch and a half tall mid-plate and many have a 4" tall inlet plenum riding on top of the blower. Side inlets basically chop that issue completely but come with their own fabrication needs.
I just found out that ford doesn't make the 54 aluminum block anymore. Or they only make the new gt500 block in aluminum. Anyone know if there is a dimensional difference between the two aluminum blocks? Like for instance height?
The new aluminum gt 500 block has new plasma arch cylinders.which means you have to use special rings. The ford gt block is the way to go. There are plenty of them still for sale between 2500.00-3500.00 depends where you get them from
5.4 gt500 block
I just received my gt500 iron short block. It looks awesome. Cam with lightning crank. Manly rods with ARP rod bolts. Mahle 16cc forged pistons. Oil pump and even cam with rear main seal cover and seal installed. I got mine from Steve at Tousley Ford for 3000 shipped to my door.
But in the event I want to use this block, could I still use my 03 cobra parts? Like with the older aluminum 5.4? And is the new aluminum 5.4 block bigger than the old one as far as height?
as far as i know the height and width are the same.there are a few lightning guys doing 4 v turbo swaps.and i havent heard of any timing cover issues.
thanks red

Question fail. cobra = 4 valve + 4.6, GT500 = 4v + 5.4. GT500 is just a cobra motor but instead of a 4.6 they used a 5.4 and a unique blower/intake setup. The GT500 heads are not 03cobra heads though. I don't think it'd work with 03/04 cobra heads. There's a few different 4v patterns, even in just C heads and a lot of confusion as to what works with what. Seek help from those that know.
well, i've been to hell and back latey and not checked much on here. who has theirs done? i went up to FTP and tried to talk with TJ but he was extremly busy and couldn't stop long enough for me to get a full sentance in. but i'm back in the saddle and gonna have this running by summer....
