97 Cobra motor knocking.

Started the Cobra not to long ago and it starting making this sound like hitting a Ball point pin on a table really fast, when the rpm's went up, now since this is my first cobra 4v I dont really know much about the mod motors so Im wondering what everyone might think could be wrong with it, Im leaning tord a head problem bc when you drive it down the road and push in the clutch the car dies and wont start unless you give her gas, I have changed the oil since then and it's still doing it. Any Ideas from anyone?

i have several freinds with cobras and have experianced this problem. DO NOT START the car again, your oil pump has failed. get an engine hoist, lift the engine up,must remove exhaust, engine mounts, tranny from its mount, basically what ever is nessisary to remove, to get the engine up high enough to get the oil pan off of the car. change your oil pump, chances are it maybe too far gone to save but you never know. it might be worth a shot. but this is worse case scenario, but like i said i know quite a few cobra owners that have experianced this same sound and problem, continued to drive it next thing they knew two or three rods were hangin out of their block

Oil pumps seem to be an issue including the Billet ones as many engines have failed due to the gears shearing off. This part has delayed my engine swap for 6months. The solution that we have come up with is to send the oil pump for cryogenic treatment. There are 1000hp drag cars running this setup with no issues.

alright does anyone know how much it might cost to get all of this done and get the car up and running again? This is the first time I've heard of this problem with them and Im just lookin for a ball park price.

Definately sounds like your oil pump. Mine hasnt failed (yet thank god!!), but I would suggest going Steeda or something like that. I actually havnt looked for a new oil pump for my car. You cant go wrong with a FoMoCo one though.

Ask Randy how much a new OEM pump would cost you. You're talking about a fairly substancial repair bill though, just because of the process in getting to that pump. Expect a good $300-400 bill for labor alone.

where can I get the steeda or FoMoCo? And what are the prices that run on them? Thanks for the help.... Davis

Ask Randy Stichcomb for one from FoMoCo (OEM) he has a subforum on here called Jusk Ask Randy. Ask him for the part you need, he can get you hooked up.

As far as Steeda goes, look on their site. http://www.steeda.com
