auto vs manual

how much worse performance wise is a 03 gt automatic with a good tune than a manual? this will be for my first car, being a student driver i want to concentrate on the road and not when to shift. but i still want good accel. will i still have good accel if i have : k&n air filter, 3.73 gears, h pipe and exhaust, and good tune?

4.6l V8 produces 260hp.
There is a 15% loss in power to the rear on a standard
there is a 20% loss in power to the rear on an automatic.

Not a big difference. Stock for stock, it really takes somone who knows what they are doing to beat the auto, cause the auto doesent **** up. :)

Manual is always just more fun, more interaction with the car. However, it is hard to reach the level of consistancy that an auto will do.

The auto tranny is a damn good performer, it launches awesome and hits every gear right on time.

As for WILL you STILL have good accelleration with those mods, Yes, in fact, you will have BETTER excelleration with those mods. Screw the 3:73's though and get 4:10's., the drop in gas mileage is very minimal especially if you dont do a lot of highway driving.

If yer looking to be a race driver go manual, if you dont really care about that and want consistant point and shoot, go for the automatic.

TEXASPAUL 01-06-2006 01:33 PM

ther is the problem i need to get 24+ mpg on highway or so

what kinda mialage would an auto with those mods get with 3.73, 3.90, and 4.10

bikerjoe 01-06-2006 01:41 PM

the diff between 3.73 n 4.10s is minimal in gas milage but in acceleration the diff is alot bigger.. especialy in an auto ..i have 4.10s n i drive on the high way everyday n i cruise at around 2500-2800 rpms which is enuff to pass ppl on the highway ..

get 4.10s ud b happier at the end ..

TEXASPAUL 01-06-2006 01:43 PM

how much miles per gallon do u get with them????

ROFL, No offence buddy, but having a mustang GT and complaining about gas mileage is like marrying a fat chick and complaining about the grocery bill.
:punk:

I dont know myself, but from what i hear there is a 1-2 MPG loss on the highway with 4:10's and about 1mph increase in the city.

Get the 4:10's, then get yourself a tuner for the speedometer correction and a performance tune with intake you shouldnt really see much of a drop at all.

I got a diablow tune and my MPG went up about 1.5mpg. Once i get my 4:10's installed i figure my fuel economy will be right back to where it was but ill have much better accelleration.

i think the RPM with 4:10's at 80mph is like 2.75k instead of 2.5k.. something like that

TEXASPAUL 01-06-2006 02:09 PM

true but this is my first car and im ok with the stock mpg just dont want to drop much more. they do take regular right??

The gears dont care what octaine you use, however, a performance tune will reuire premium. Honestly, it is only about 3-4 dollars extra per tank, not that big of a deal. <g>

r3dn3ck 01-06-2006 02:14 PM

w00t! jack nailed it man. If you're sniveling about gas mileage you got the wrong car. Sorry dude but the fact of the matter is, horsepower production is a function of how much gas you can burn. The more dinosaurs you burn the more power you can make. You bought a car with a stout appetite under a heavy right foot.

Anyway, since you have an auto, get the 4.10's and learn to use cruise control. Your engine can manage itself better than you can on the longer runs. I use mine in town but, I'm that way. You should probably be able to consistenly make 22-24mpg highway (that means cruise control on just chillin highway, not haulin' ass highway) regardless of what gears you get. I see the most difference in town (much lower mileage... bad). highway runs to the other end of california still have me getting gas at the same ol' places. Using less gas pedal to fly up the Grapevine (a big nasty gas eating car overheating low mountain pass in SoCal) in 5th gear saves a good bit of gas regardless of RPM.

TEXASPAUL 01-06-2006 02:17 PM

can i get a tune with regular gas?
and how good of a 0-60 will i get with a stock gt with 3.90 and 4.10

Performance tune with Diablow requires premium or you'll mess yer engine up.

0-60?... not sure....

4:10's are known on stock GT's to shave 1/2 a second on the 1/4 mile. 4:10,. Chip, intake, and some exhaust work you should be hitting 13s second 1/4 miles easily at sea level on a cool day.

im still not sure what a stock GT does in the 0-60. Ive read 5.5, 5.9, and 6.5 for the 99-04 models. Beats me, i know when i get on the highway and floor it im past 60 in no time. :)

HA HA HA HA.....that's freaking funny dude.

TClark22 01-06-2006 02:41 PM

i would get a manual...you will regret gettin an auto...like me

4.6 Love 01-06-2006 03:13 PM

An auto can run just as good if not better than a manual. With a good stall and right gears it will be just as fast of the line as any manual car. However, manuals are just more fun to drive IMHO. Also remember that if you plan on drag racing, autos are far more consistant, and have are less prone to breakage.

I had the same questions 3 months ago when i was looking for my mustang. I was undecided on auto or stick, but was leaning towards auto. I thought that stick would be such a hassle. A good deal came up on a stick, and i took it. So far i like it. Gives me something to do when i'm driving. This is my first car and i was also a little hesitant about a stick because i only drove a manual car a few times.

mac0021 01-06-2006 07:14 PM

Complaining about gas with a mustang :nono: I got one because it gets good gas mileage.....compared to a LS1 atleast.

Jack The Ripper 01-06-2006 07:51 PM

Yeah. Just get used to the fact yer gonna have to line the oil companys wallets a little more than that tree hugging smug prick down the block with his honda insight.

holy crap
im not complaning i just dont want kill the gas mileage!!!!!
if i gave a **** bout gas milage i'd buy a P.O.S. HONDA!!!

lol

that was nice to get off my chest...

pimpmustangGT 01-06-2006 08:38 PM

Tit for TAt

Actually that is not true... the manual by its very nature will put more of wutever power you have to the wheels making it therefore faster than the auto, alos you cannot dump an auot like u can a manual...(MAJOR DIFFERNCE) .. Not to mention the stock auto shifter just looks retarded and anybody seeing you drive an auto will laugh at you... Also the manual will last alot longer than the auto - alos its easier and cheaper to upgrade... Some people just need to come to terms that they made a bad descision with the auto.. its ok we all make mistakes .. but don't make up bullSh!t to make your self feel better... it just doesnt work... - All this being said autos have their place.. with moms and grandmas -lol j/k ..but not really - and also if your making retarded power 700+ to the wheels a beefed up auto may be the correct choice... but since I dont think any of us are in that boat.. dont be a ***** and ge manual .. the motoring world will respect you for it!

TClark22 01-06-2006 10:42 PM

well the way u came off you were complaining about it...i really cant see any performance mods helping ur gas milage...alot of the mods will hurt it

TEXASPAUL 01-07-2006 10:06 AM

yeah
i dont want this car to be too much of a beast
it will be a daily driver and needs to be fun all at the same time.
it wont race
it wont drag
just make me giddy with acceleration!!! :)

dom 01-07-2006 11:00 AM

auto are faster

I've actually done it, stock 2000 V6 manual vs stock 2000 V6 auto... unless white is just faster than red??

dom 01-07-2006 11:21 AM

i didnt know we were debating 15-16 second cars. i was comparing race cars. autos will win. the stickshift will read more rwhp. but the auto will launch better, shift better, and run more consistantly. if i were to swap my exact transmission for a stickshift, and leave everything else the same. id run much slower

TEXASPAUL 01-07-2006 11:26 AM

we were talking bout a 03 gt but msr 6er came in here

mac0021 01-07-2006 05:37 PM

From what youve been saying Id get the manual if i was you....theyre more fun for just driving around. Either way for your first car i think it will accel enough for you :beerchug:

Milos 01-07-2006 05:59 PM

Ehh I don't know, when it comes to the manual/auto thing its down to the driver... but I don't tend to race mine, only against my asshole friends and their ricers, I get em' everytime though, Z24's, minorly pimped Integras... never beat the V6 Avenger though..... :dots:

pimpmustangGT 01-08-2006 01:20 AM

well needles to say if you cant shift worth a **** your going to lose....other wise the manual will always be faster if done right
